CONTINENTAL ARMY STAVED CANTEEN MARKED "U:STATES" United States,C. 1777Staved canteen with two interlocking hoops, marked on the face "U:STATES", with a paper label on the opposite side marked "Canteen used/by William Fleming/of Lower Oxford/township, Ches. Co, Pa/In the war of 1812," with a remnant of what looks like an iron wire loop on the side which may have been for a string for the stopper, and two leather tabs with linen stitching which held the leather shoulder strap in place. Note: There is a Thomas Fleming that appears in the 4th Pennsylvania Battalion in 1776, as well as other units later in the war. There is also a few listings for a Thomas Fleming in the War of 1812 records.
