12TH C. MAJAPAHIT STONE HANUMAN
12TH C. MAJAPAHIT STONE HANUMAN FIGURE MONKEY-FORM**Originally Listed At $3500**
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A charming sculpture, a large Hanuman figure in the form of a monkey kneeling on a platform, his hands raised to support an offering bowl. Carved from a grey volcanic stone, the figure has weathered to an interestingly textured surface. Hanuman has a delightful countenance, with a long snout that rests on his portly torso, deeply incised eyes and mouth. His round ears bulge outward behind his raised paws. Size: 4.55" L x 4.1" W x 12.5" H (11.6 cm x 10.4 cm x 31.8 cm)
During the later Majapahit Empire, the buildings of East Java - both religious and secular - were decorated with dramatic figural sculptures in stone and terracotta. Many of the remaining sculptures display characters from the great Hindu epic Ramayana, including Hanuman, who often plays a major role. Hanuman's mystical qualities seem to have particularly beguiled the people of East Java, who depict him in a great detail in their art, emphasizing the Tantric themes of the god's story. For example, at the Panataran, a large Hindu temple complex (now ruined) in East Java, and the favorite sanctuary of the Majapahit King Hayam Wuruk, Hanuman plays a central role in the many reliefs still visible on its walls. These depict his role in reuniting Rama with his wife Sita after her imprisonment by the demon king Rahwana. The artisan who carved this offering bowl would have been channeling this powerful story.

18TH C. SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER
18TH C. SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER TUPUS + BELT FITTINGS**Originally Listed At $300**
South America, Peru, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A gathering of 13 silver items, ranging from high quality 75.6% to 94.7% silver and encompassing a variety of objects: tupus (pins), finials, belt fittings which include a buckle and strap rings. The 5 tupus or ttipqui are garment pins in the form of spoons. Three have etched foliate designs on their neck and bowls, and one has a twisted wrought handle and wire finial. Andean women have used pins in their clothing since 1000 CE, and after European contact, many tupu and ttipqui pins were made from silver spoons, and later designs incorporated spoon shapes, such as these. The belt pieces include a circular buckle, 5 ring fittings, a flower finial, and an elongated terminal with a slit at the top for the tip of the leather strap; all with repousse and openwork foliate forms. COVERLET ATTRIBUTED TO HARRY
COVERLET ATTRIBUTED TO HARRY TYLER FOR LYDIA TIFT, JEFFERSON COUNTY, NY 1849COVERLET ATTRIBUTED TO HARRY TYLER FOR LYDIA TIFT, JEFFERSON COUNTY, NY 1849, two-part jacquard weave in off-white and indigo, with border of repeating Neoclassical urns amid foliate motifs, two corners with American eagle clutching "E. Pluribus Unum" in beak, signed "Lydia. Tift Jefferson Co. NY 1849," central design with repeating geometric starbursts and decorative motifs, l: 83 1/2 x w: 82 in.; the second an overshot coverlet, in indigo and white with square geometric pattern, l: 76 x w: 93 1/2 in. (2) Catalogue Essay: The jacquard coverlet was likely woven by Harry Tyler as a gift to "Lydia Tift". Tyler was born in Connecticut, moving to New York sometime around 1834. His son, Elman Tyler (1829-1909), was also a coverlet weaver and wove coverlets in the same pattern as his father, even after Harry’s death in 1858. There are over 300 coverlets attributed to Tyler, but very little documentary evidence of his business activity or life survives. His coverlets are identifiable by his use of jacquard weave, blue and white, sometimes red, as well as figural/American eagle motifs. The Jefferson County Historical Society has over 40 Harry Tyler coverlets in its collection, they are represented in major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American History Museum. Provenance: For a similarly patterned quilt, see Jeffrey S. Evans & Assoc. auctions, sold June 27, 2020, Lot #1411.
