MOCHE BICHROME MASK- PORTRAIT OF
MOCHE BICHROME MASK- PORTRAIT OF A MALE**Originally Listed At $900**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A mesmerizing portrait mask in terracotta with an attractive bi-chrome finish. The visage is skillfully delineated in low to high relief with large almond-shaped eyes, a very naturalistic nose, pursed lips framed by nasolabial folds, full cheeks, a rounded chin, symmetrically placed ears, and a wide-brimmed hat or helmet. There are numerous tiny perforations along the brim which likely once held feathers or other ornaments. Two perforations above the ears were used for attachment. The mask was beautifully burnished and creamy white pigment was used to highlight the eyes, creating a nice contrast with the orangeware. This mask is likely a portrait of an important member of Moche society depicted as a young man. The Moche are known for their portrait vessels portraying the same individual at different stages of life, but terracotta masks are less common. One cannot help but wonder whom this mask was intended to represent. Size: 8.25" W x 7.375" H (21 cm x 18.7 cm); 13.25" H (33.7 cm) on included custom stand.

LOVELY & IMPORTANT ROMAN SILVER
LOVELY & IMPORTANT ROMAN SILVER STATUETTE OF VENUSRoman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 3rd century CE. An exquisite statuette cast from 70% to 75% silver depicting Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love, romance, and passion. Venus stands with her left leg extended and wears a luxurious chiton that is draped across her left shoulder. Her right hand is held atop her thigh as her left hand grasps her breast to keep her flowing garment from falling. Her classic visage is defined by sensitive almond-shaped eyes under heavy brows, a petite nose above full lips, rounded cheeks, and a scallop-adorned fillet, all beneath a wavy, centrally parted coiffure which culminates in a bun on the verso. The importance of this piece stems from its large size - similar examples tend to be smaller - and how it is made from silver rather than bronze or another, less opulent material. An exceedingly rare and exemplary statuette of Venus! Size: 1.25" W x 4.7" H (3.2 cm x 11.9 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: 70% to 75%
Venus (Aphrodite in the Greek pantheon) has inspired countless depictions throughout the history of artistic creation. Among the most famous are Greek Attic sculptor Praxiteles' "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360 to 330 BCE), the equally famous "Lely's Venus" (ca. 100 to 199 CE), Alexandros of Antioch's "Venus de Milo" (ca. 130 to 100 BCE), the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli's masterful painting "Birth of Venus" (1484 to 1486 CE), and Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens' equally masterful painting "Judgement of Paris" (ca. 1636).

PUBLISHED / EXHIBITED ROMAN
PUBLISHED / EXHIBITED ROMAN BRONZE VENUS W/ SILVER EYES...Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A stunning leaded bronze figure of Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love and beauty, enveloped in a verdant green patina. Crowned by a crescent-shaped diadem, the gorgeous deity stands in contrapposto with her right leg bent at the knee and her weight gracefully shifted. Her left arm gently bends as her hand grazes her body, hovering over her sex, perhaps a gesture of modesty like the Venus Pudica, and her right hand extends out from her body in a welcoming pose. The goddess turns her head ever-so-slightly toward her right, her tranquil visage displaying naturalistic features framed by a rolled back coiffure resolving in a chignon, while soft tendrils grace her shoulders. A truly remarkable relic from the ancient Roman Empire! Size: 1.5" W x 3.4" H (3.8 cm x 8.6 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
A breathtaking representation of the goddess who possessed such sublime beauty that she inspired much rivalry among the gods, all of whom wished to make her his wife. According to classical mythology, Jupiter (Zeus) determined that Venus (Aphrodite) would marry Vulcan (Hephaestus), the handicapped blacksmith god. Vulcan in turn created a magical girdle to guarantee her fidelity. Unfortunately for him, the Goddess of Love and Beauty proved unfaithful. Venus (Aphrodite) has inspired countless representations in visual culture, among the most famous, Attic sculptor Praxiteles' "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360 to 330 BCE) and Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" (1484-86).
