GORGEOUS 9TH C. VIKING GLASS BEAD
GORGEOUS 9TH C. VIKING GLASS BEAD NECKLACENorthern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A lengthy strand necklace strung with dozens of glass beads dating to the Viking era or earlier Roman and Byzantine workshops. This wearable necklace contains glass in semi-translucent and opaque in hues of cobalt, others a pearlescent-white, shimmery yellow, or even bichrome with stripes or millefiori. A single silver bead formed by a coiled wire is also part of the strand. The beads are a variety of molded forms, either ovoid, lozenge, spherical, or tubular, with several beads bearing a knobbed surface. The central pendant bead is a millefiori-style with small canes of white and cobalt glass coursing throughout the body and make for an interesting eye-shaped motif. The beads are strung in modern times with a silver-plated barrel clasp to make this a wearable piece. Size of necklace: 33" L (83.8 cm); eye bead: 0.75" W (1.9 cm)
By 800 CE, the Vikings were trading across a huge area, from the islands of the North Atlantic (the first glass beads known from North America appear to have come from the Viking trading post at L'anse aux Meadow, Newfoundland) to northern Russia and the Islamic world; glass beadmaking was a standard in many of the regions they visited, and so they returned home and established beadmaking workshops in Scandinavia such as Helgo, Paviken, or Birka.

18TH C. GERMAN NECKLACES
18TH C. GERMAN NECKLACES CARNELIAN & GLASS TRADE BEADWestern Europe, Germany, ca. 18th to 19th century CE; West Africa, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fine pair of necklaces with African glass trade beads and carnelian stones, all strung in modern times as wearable accessories. The 25 carnelians are cut and polished in Germany and were likely brought to Africa as trade beads, and all exhibit rectangular tube shapes with lustrous citrine hues and creamy white inclusions. The highly polished surfaces are quite smooth and tactile. Carnelian beads used in Africa usually came from Brazil or the German town of Idar-Oberstein, which was known as a gemstone center. The 25 glass beads are elongated with faceted sides; while used for trade and adornment in Africa, these beads likely originated in Europe, perhaps Germany. Both sets of beads are arranged on modern wires with a raffia fiber covering the terminal knot and are a great pair to wear separate or together! Size (glass strand doubled): 24" L (61 cm); (largest bead): 1" L x 0.2" W (2.5 cm x 0.5 cm); (carnelian necklace): 25" L (63.5 cm); (largest bead): 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm)

A fine pair of glass bead necklaces with brass face pendants that were made by the Naga culture to wear as decorative pieces and to symbolize trophy heads. The first has a button clasp and cord loop terminal tip that branches into multiple strands strung with hundreds of red seed beads that are braided together, coalescing at a pair of black spherical beads with white inlays. The strands branch again and contain dozens of blue seed beads and a pair of white tubular beads that flank the cast-brass pendant with repousse stylized features. The pendant represents a trophy - reserved for warriors that had taken heads. The other necklace consists of matte, opaque glass beads in red, yellow, and orange with a pair of conical brass ornaments just before the trophy head pendant. Both necklaces are wearable! Size (orange necklace): 27" L (68.6 cm); (brass heads): 2.5" L x 1.75" W (6.4 cm x 4.4 cm); (necklace with multiple strands): 24.5" L (62.2 cm)

BEAUTIFUL BACTRIAN QUARTZ BEAD
BEAUTIFUL BACTRIAN QUARTZ BEAD NECKLACECentral Asia, Bactria, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. This is a stunning and wearable collection of 19 rock crystals or quartz beads, hand-cut and drilled in ancient times, gathered here and strung on a modern wire as a wearable necklace! Each bead is carved into tubular, barrel, or rounded biconical shapes, and polished to a smooth finish. The beads are tastefully arranged on the strand, graduating to larger sizes as they coalesce to a central pendant bead. The necklace has a gold-plated lobster clasp, and modern glass beads are strung between the ancient quartz to balance the ensemble. The ancient crystalline stones are inherently beautiful with varying degrees of translucency, and the biconically drilled perforations are visible on the interior of most. The glassy quality was mysterious and alluring to ancient cultures. In fact, Pliny the Elder believed that quartz was fossilized ice, permanently frozen into stones, a belief that persisted into the 17th century! Size of necklace: 17" L (43.2 cm); largest bead: 1" L x 0.65" W (2.5 cm x 1.7 cm)

TAIRONA GREENSTONE AXE HEADPre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A nice example of a sweeping axe head that is hand-carved from mottled grass green stone with beautiful dark gray, beige, and cream veining. The tool features a crescent-shaped blade head, a sturdy, rectangular neck, and a thick handle with a biconically drilled suspension hole. 9TH C. VIKING BRONZE CHAPE OR
9TH C. VIKING BRONZE CHAPE OR STYLUS CASENorthern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12h century CE. A fine cast-bronze chape to protect the blade of a petite blade or tool, with an attached chain for suspension. The chape has a tapered profile and an integral suspension loop on one side and a flange with 4 perforations and geometric relief patterns. The chain attaches to the upper perforation and the links are made from thick double rings. While chapes are usually for swords or daggers, this piece has a rounded cylindrical opening, much too narrow for a normal knife blade, suggesting a pick shaped tool was inserted, such as a stylus. Size of chape: 3.3" L x 0.8" W (8.4 cm x 2 cm); chain: 6.25" L (15.9 cm)

6 VIKING & MEDIEVAL ERA SILVER
6 VIKING & MEDIEVAL ERA SILVER TRADE INGOTSNorthern and Western Europe, Viking to Medieval period, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. A collection of 6 high quality 90% silver ingots used for trade throughout Viking and Medieval ages. The bars are elongated with flattened faces and sides. The 2 petite ingots were likely made by melting worked silver into a bar or rod, then dividing into sections. The Vikings had a bullion system based largely on silver where the purity and weight of the silver determined wealth, rather than relying on the face value of minted coins. Examples of Viking trade ingots are usually cigar-shaped with parallel sides and rounded tips, as exemplified by several in this collection. The chips and nicks on ingots were often the result of checking for plating or silver finesse by measuring how hard or soft the bar was to ensure the silver purity. During medieval times the ingot system was often used in conjunction with minted coinage. Size of longest: 2.75" L x 0.35" W (7 cm x 0.9 cm); shortest: 0.7" L x 0.25" W (1.8 cm x 0.6 cm); silver quality: 90%; total weight: 93.3 grams

THREE 18TH C. FRENCH ETCHINGS AFTER
THREE 18TH C. FRENCH ETCHINGS AFTER CHARLES LE BRUNEurope, France, ca. 18th century. Three hand-colored French etchings finished with engraving after paintings by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) - first painter to King Louis XIV - who created a great number of works for the Palace of Versailles during the 17th century. Titles of these etchings include: "Jonction des deux Mers 1667" (Junction of the Two Rivers 1667); "Etablissemens de L'Hotel Royal des Invalides 1674" (Establishment of the Royal Residence of the Invalids 1674); and "Reparation de l'attentat des Corses 1666 (Repair of the Attach of Corses 1666). Each features a central medallion with a figural scene - i.e. Neptune representing the ocean shaking hands with the personification of the Mediterranean sea - flanked by two atlantes and surmounted by a pediment adorned with a mask, a pair of putti, floral garlands, and a basket of fruit. See the extended description below for specific identifications of designer and engravers as well as artist biography for Charles Le Brun, the First Painter To The King (Louis XIV) who embellished Versailles with his art. Size (sheets): approximately 20.5" L x 13.375" W (52.1 cm x 34 cm)

About the artist: "Charles Le Brun (1619–1690) was the dominant painter, designer, and artistic authority during the first decades of Louis XIV’s reign. In addition to being premier peintre du roi (first painter to the king), he directed the Gobelins Manufactory, supervising dozens of artists and craftsmen in the production of tapestries and other furnishings for the decoration of royal palaces. Le Brun was also the leader of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, where he gave several highly influential lectures.
The early decorative programs at Versailles were largely the work of Le Brun. They included designs for garden statues, fountains, and festivals and culminated in the monumental paintings on the ceiling of the Hall of Mirrors. After the death of Colbert in 1683, he received no more major commissions but continued to occupy a central position in the academy." AMERICAN ELIZABETH PAGE 1786
AMERICAN ELIZABETH PAGE 1786 NEEDLEPOINT SAMPLERFramed American needlepoint sampler on linen, Elizabeth Page, April 1786, with upper and lowercase alphabet and numbers, hymn from Isaac Watts (United Kingdom, 1674-1748) and quotes from Oliver Goldsmith (Irish, 1728-1774), bright floral border, sight: approx 12.75"h, 10"w, overall: approx 14"h, 11.25"w, 2lbs *Provenance: The Veazey family was a prominent fixture of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The initial immigrant ancestor was John Veazey, who settled on two tracts of land in Cecil County in the late seventeenth century. Thomas Ward Veazey was born on January 31, 1774 at the family estate Cherry Grove to Edward (c.1730-1784) and Elizabeth [nee de Coursey] (c.1730-1791) Veazey. Thomas was orphaned at a young age, and would receive his education at Washington College, where he graduated in 1795. Thomas married three times to Sarah Worrell (Kent County, Maryland, d.1795), Mary Veazey (d.1810), and Mary Wallace (Elkton, Maryland, 1789-1867). He fathered eleven children. His political career began in 1808 when he served as a presidential elector for James Madison. He later served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1811 to 1812, relinquishing his seat in the General Assembly to participate in the War of 1812. During the conflict, he commanded militia forces defending Fredericktown in Cecil County, where the town was destroyed by fire during a British raid. After the war, he returned to Cherry Grove as a gentleman planter until in 1833, when he was chosen as a member of the Governor’s Council. In 1835, he was nominated as a candidate for governor, receiving fifty-three out of the seventy-six ballots cast. He was sworn in as the 24th Governor of Maryland on January 14, 1836 and would serve until 1839. His governorship weathered the constitutional crisis of 1837 and is remembered for its successful solution to the reapportionment crisis. His term would represent the last Whig Party administration to hold the Maryland governor’s office. He died on July 1, 1842 at Cherry Grove. This collection of historic items is offered through our consignor from the estate of Katherine Hartley Grauer [nee Craycroft] (1908-1997), great-granddaughter of Col. Thomas Ward Veazey.*
