ITALIAN SCHOOL 19TH C. PAINTING, THEITALIAN SCHOOL 19TH C. PAINTING, THE ANGEL OF THE ANNUN...Italian School 19th century oil on canvas painting, "The Angel of the Annunciation," depicting a winged angel, possibly Archangel Gabriel, holding a bouquet of lilies, a symbol of the Virgin Mother's purity at the time of her conception with the Christ child, rendered with dramatic tenebrism. Inscribed in Italian en verso of canvas "F. Furini fece dal'originale/ Florence 1812". Old Italian label for Gilder & Varnisher Carlo Bartolini, Florence, adhered en verso of frame. Housed in the original 19th-century custom Florentine frame with lily decoration to spandrels and pierced scrolling acanthus leaves to the perimeter. Sight: 27 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W. Framed: 39 1/2" H x 33 1/2" W. Italian, 19th-century. Note: The mention of Filippo or Francesco Furini as the source of the image is debatable, as the painting seems to more closely follow paintings based on the work of Carlo Dolci (Italian 1616-1686). For a similar example, see the painting by T. Berti, "The Angel of the Annunciation, 19th century, after Carlo Dolci," in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia.

19TH C. MOROCCAN GLAZED POTTERY BOWL,19TH C. MOROCCAN GLAZED POTTERY BOWL, EX-MUSEUMNorth Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, Islamic culture, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous pottery bowl adorned with blue and white pigments. Sitting upon a ring-form foot, the lovely vessel presents thick walls that rise to a wide, circular rim over a deep basin. The interior is skillfully glazed with beautiful abstract designs comprised of spiral, geometric, and floral motifs. These patterns are influenced by the cultural blend of Islamic tradition and Berber tribal symbols. Bowls like this one are formed on wheels, then placed out to dry, fired, and painted. Once painted, the pieces are fired a second time to seal the glaze. The Fez region that produces this type of pottery is renowned for its beautiful cobalt hues - like those seen in this example - which is indeed created by crushing cobalt stones. A perforation in the foot would allow the dish to be suspended for display when not in use. Size: 13.7" Diameter x 3.7" H (34.8 cm x 9.4 cm)

Condition:
This pastel portrait has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very nice condition. Signature and date are on lower right. Signature is difficult to decipher, but date is 1926. The frame has some expected surface wear, nicks/chips, fissures, a small area of loss/repair at the upper left corner that has been touched up with pigment, and a few cracks/losses to high-pointed areas of the ornamentation. Frame is fitted with a suspension wire which we would recommend replacing with new wire. Otherwise, glass is intact, and frame is quite attractive with extensive gilding and ornamentation.

20TH C. MEXICAN STEATITE TOTEM JAGUAR20TH C. MEXICAN STEATITE TOTEM JAGUAR & TLALOC CARVING**First Time At Auction**
Latin America, Mexico, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a highly stylized steatite carving of a totem pole featuring fierce animals and anthropomorphic forms. The 4 figures rest on a rectangular base and are stacked atop each other, the base figure is a large open-mouthed jaguar with large fangs and a stylized square shaped head, nostrils, and narrow feline eyes to the sides. Above is a crouching humanoid figure with bulging eyes and blocky profile, another jaguar, and finally a grinning head - human, but with bared teeth and oversized nose, perhaps a representation of Tlaloc. Tlaloc is the Mesoamerican rain deity who - with his axe made of lightning - strikes the clouds and produces thunder and rain. In an iconographic sense, he is often shown with goggles around his eyes and large fangs. He is also frequently represented in artwork from Teotihuacan and the Aztecs, and seems to have been one of the most commonly depicted Mesoamerican gods. Size: 1.5" L x 1.75" W x 9.5" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 24.1 cm)

The king sits in royal regalia, with a large sword resting on his shoulder and one hand calmly placed on his knee. The applied ridges across his torso and incised lines on his face represent ritualist scarification or tattoos for rank or warrior status, and he stares impassively forward. The elongated beard, conical headdress, and jewelry, throne, and giant stature compared to his attendants, all emphasize his royal bearing. The verso of the throne is also engraved with a reptilian or crocodile creature to symbolize his tribe's power. Great orange red mineral and earthen deposits coat the surface in recessed areas. 18TH C. THAI BRASS SEATED BUDDHA, EX18TH C. THAI BRASS SEATED BUDDHA, EX MUSEUM**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin Period, ca. 19th century CE. A splendid brass Buddha seated in lotus position atop a tiered, triangular plinth enveloped in a lustrous gold-hued pigment. Gazing forth from downcast eyes, the tranquil deity displays the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward, while his left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as Buddha defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. His serene visage is comprised of an arching brow, a pointed nose, slender eyes, and a gentle smile, all capped by a meticulously coiled coiffure and flanked by a pair of lengthy ears which symbolize his divinity. Size: 9.9" W x 14.2" H (25.1 cm x 36.1 cm)
This Buddha possesses the classic elements of Thai artwork from this period, when the region was ruled by one of the most powerful kingdoms in its history. Buddhas are shown seated on ornate pedestals and decorated extensively. This particular Buddha wears a beautiful costume with flowered details that are echoed on the front canopy of his throne. The Rattanakosin style is considered the continuation of the Ayutthaya style that rose after the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. Wood became less important than it was in the Ayutthaya period, and brass or bronze became the materials of choice.
