FRENCH & INDIAN WAR DS, PENNSYLVANIA, 1758 Original signed order of Deputy Governor William Denny (1709-'65, royal governor of Pennsylvania, 1756-'59) May 8, 1758, requiring Capt. Garraway's company of militia to gather at Bethlehem and all the other forces east of the Susquehanna to prepare to march to Carlisle "on the first Notice," and announcing the promotion of Capt. Joseph Shippen to Brigade Major. Shippen, 1732-1810, and his soldiers would play a prominent role in Forbes' Campaign, which culminated in the capture of Fort Duquesne on Nov. 25, 1758; 1 p. 4to, laid down on a heavy sheet of paper.

The London Gazette number 38, March 22 thro ugh March 26, 1666, approx. 6-1/4" L x 11" H. The Observator number 18, May 28, 1681, approx. 7-1/4" L x 12" H. Historical topics include the Second Ango Dutch War, Cretan War, the minting of new money, the British Civil War, anti Whig sentiments n the question and answer format, and various religious or political topics. Extensive fading and browning to silk, approximately 1-1/2 x 6 in. area with losses of silk ground and some shattering, losses to embroidered elements, possible pest damage; frame with losses and chips.

English horn cup dated 1788, finely detailed engraving with horse-drawn carriages, architectural details, animals in foreground, marked "N Spilman Fecit" and inscribed "A west prospect of Mr. S. Allen's bath house, and an assembly room, Great Yarmouth", and at base "This commodious bath house into which the salt water is raised by a machine every tide was erected some years ago where Valetudinarians and company of both sexes are attended with safety & decency. Contemporary mottled tan calf with five section spine and tab 'W:Penns Writings' front board repaired at spine. Estimate ?5 000-10 000 William Penn (1644-1718) married Gulielma Springett (1644-1694) in April 1672 in Chorley Wood. They had fourteen children but few survived to adulthood and only the eldest William appears to have had children. The present vendors maternal grandmothers family were the Springetts an important Sussex family. Indeed Gulielma's father has a memorial and is buried in Ringmer parish church. The binding is original however it has been repaired down the right hand fold has a crack running the full length of the spine and is worn on the other fold some chipping here. Old but not original front end papers. Pages at the beginning of the book are browned and with some slight damp marks. As one moves into the book the pages become cleaner and fairly bright. First two pages of Saul 1675 and loose at the bottom. Latter tracts are folded in at end some miss-creasing and small holes. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear imperfections or the effects of aging.
