Continental School 17th Century Three quarter portrait of a noblewoman. Oil on wood panel no signature found framed in a wide antique coved frame in black painted finish overall 30-3/4" x 24". Strip of textile has been applied vertically to the back of the panel probably to arrest a crack. Old stenciled auction numbers and partial sticker verso. The artwork is inscribed on the verso with white chalk "Rousuck" possibly E. J. Rousuck who was an Ohio native and former owner of Scott & Fowles a small New York art gallery that handled old master paintings.

Founded on October 28, 1771 by John Dunlap, the printer of The Declaration of Independence, this strongly pro-Revolutionary paper, published by Dunlap & David C. Claypoole - during some periods together & during others by one or the other. During the British occupation of Philadelphia, the paper was published in lancaster. The Sept. 19th, 1787 issue [not included above] was devoted to the publication in full of the United States Constitution. ,500-
