Occasional minor dampstaining, but internally generally clean & bright. Early owners' ink signatures on title page, minor staining & smudging to title. This French translation was made by The Duc de la Rochefoucault, at Benjamin Franklin's suggestion. It includes over fifty footnotes by Franklin. IMPORTANT ENGRAVING, LOUISBOURG, DATED 1771After Richard Paton (English 1717-1791), coloured engraving dated 1771 by Pierre -Charles Canot, RA (1710-1777), "The burning of the Prudent and taking of the Bienfaisant in Louisbourg Harbour, Cape Breton, 1758". This rare and historically important engraving shows the capture of Louisbourg by Admiral Bascawen, supported by General Amherst with his ground troops. Here we see the Prudent ablaze in Louisbourg harbour after Capt. Laforey and Balfour found her aground and were obliged to burn her. This historical event was the beginning of the Seven Years' War, and led to the subsequent British campaign to capture Quebec in 1759. Condition: entirely original condition, not laid down, full plate mark on all sides, 3 or 4 slight marginal tears just entering plate mark, but not entering engraved surface. Print is in exceptional condition for its age. (Original sold by Christie's, Lot 59, 1 April 2015 for $96,232 USD). 16" x 23" at sight.

A copy of Elements of Natural Philosophy; Explaining the Laws and Principles of Attraction, Gravitation, Mechanics, Pneumatics, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Electricity, and Optics: with a General View of the Solar System, by John Webster, with Notes and Corrections by Robert Patterson (Philadelphia, 1808). Patterson (1743-1824) was a Revolutionary War veteran, member of the American Philosophical Society, director of the U.S. Mint from 1805 until his death, and professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania from 1779 to 1810. At President Jefferson?s request, in 1803 Patterson taught Lewis & Clark how to calculate latitude and longitude. This copy was bound in quarter-leather by Turner Hamilton, bookbinder at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and was in that institution?s library. Front cover is detached, but present.

1831 MILTARY ORDER SIGNED BY KING WILLIAM IV OF ENGLAND (REIGNED 1830 - 1837) Docketed as "Horse Guards 14 Jany 1831; Memorandum; The Service Companies of the 87th to proceed to the Maritius". Bifold with blank interior, ALS "It is Most humbly submitted to Your Majesty: That as soon as Ships can be prepared and the season will permit, the Service Companies of the 87th Regiment be ordered to embark for the Mauritius to relieve the 82nd which has been abroad since 1819." Signed "Appd. W.R." and in red pencil: "Memo to Adj. General 18th Jany, Do to QMGen Do Letter to Lieut. Genl. Honble Sir C. Colville 1st February". Mauritius, an Indian Ocean Island nation, was one of the leading providers of sugar at the time. This very year, the constitution of 1831 provided for a Council of Government, in which representation was largely by Europeans.

The Delegates of the United States…", licensing William McFadden, Commander of the Sloop Mars, belonging to John Maxwell Nesbitt and Co., "to fit out and set forth the said Sloop in a warlike manner…by Force of Arms, to attack, subdue and take all ships…carrying Soldiers, Arms, Gunpowder, Provisions…to any of the British Armies or Ships of War employed against these United States…Philadelphia, August 4, 1778", signed in brown ink, "Henry Laurens" as President, "Chas Thomson" as Secretary, and "T[imothy] Matlack, Secy of the Council of Pennsa", 8-3/4 x 13 in. Separated into four sections vertically at folds, rejoined with paper tape on verso, folds through "n" of "Laurens" and "Matlack", minor holes, edge chips and losses, marginal dampstains, toning. Descended in the family Lewis Tawes Matlack (later Birkhead), a descendant of Timothy Matlack, the engrosser who hand lettered the Declaration of Independence.
