Note: A nearly identical inkwell retailed by Thomas Weekes Museum with the urn on a wood stump and the guilloche cast inkwell was sold Christie's, London, July 19, 2022, Lot 232. A similar inkwell with three identical elements as the above offered lot and probably retailed by Thomas Weekes, sold Christie's, London, The Legend of Dick Turpin, Part 1, March 8, 2006, Lot 309. Thomas Weekes (c. 1740-1834) was the proprietor of the Weekes Museum, Tichbourne Street London. It was founded in 1790 and carried automata, clocks, temples and objects of curiosity. "There were birds than not only sung, but hopt from stick to stick in their cages, mice made of pearl that could run about nimbly and silver swans swimming in water, serpents winding themselves up trees, tarantulas running backwards and forwards." An account from Benjamine Rush, Memoranda of a Residence of the Court of London Comprising Incidents Official and Personal from 1819-182 5, pages 46-49. Condition In good overall condition with very minor wear throughout. Lacking glass inkwell insert. Nicely chased with some polish residue.
