American School 20th c. "Holding the Floor" oil on canvas initialed "B.P." and dated "37" lower right 24 in. x 22 in. unframed. Note: In 1937 the Southern Negro Youth Congress was established by young people who had attended the1936 National Negro Congress in Chicago and wanted to implement its call for action. These young leaders including veteran activists James Jackson Edward Strong Helen Gray and Esther Cooper gathered in Richmond Virginia and formed the first headquarters of SNYC. In 1939 the organization would move its headquarters to Birmingham Alabama.
