Figures of the 19th C Signatures, Hugo/Holmes c/o newspaper from March 25th, 1836 public ledger Philadelphia vol 1 no. 1, with creasing, some loss and foxing, F-G, signature cuts include Victor Hugo d. 1885, French writer and politician, along with Oliver Wendell Holmes d. 1935 signature card March 11 1885- Boston, at this time period a lawyer in Boston, will become Supreme Court member in 1902. Both signatures appear to have originated from scrapbook with additional paper adhered to back, neither effect signature, without certification.

Southern School (Third Quarter 19th Century) in the Manner of Nicola Marschall (German/American, 1829-1917; Active Alabama and New Orleans) and William Frye (American/Alabama, 1822-1872) "Portrait of a Young Boy with His Cat Seated in a Country Landscape", oil on canvas, unsigned, 36" x 28". Presented in a molded giltwood frame. Provenance: Sold at Morton Goldberg Auction, New Orleans, ca. 1983; Private collection, Mobile, Alabama, ca. 1983-2000; Sold in these rooms on January 20, 2001, lot 1128; Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. Reference: National Society of Colonial Dames, Louisiana Portraits; Colonial Dames, Alabama Portraits Prior to 1870; Falk Who Was Who in American Art. This charming picture resembles portraits of children and their pets found in the Colonial Dames' Louisiana and Alabama portrait books, such as, Nicola Marschall's "Portrait of Margaret Elizabeth Dale with Rabbit" (La. Portraits, p. 69); Marschall's "Portrait of Elisha T. Hogue" (Al. Portraits, p.167); William Frye's "Richardson Children" (Al. American School 20th c. "Holding the Floor" oil on canvas initialed "B.P." and dated "37" lower right 24 in. x 22 in. unframed. Note: In 1937 the Southern Negro Youth Congress was established by young people who had attended the1936 National Negro Congress in Chicago and wanted to implement its call for action. These young leaders including veteran activists James Jackson Edward Strong Helen Gray and Esther Cooper gathered in Richmond Virginia and formed the first headquarters of SNYC. In 1939 the organization would move its headquarters to Birmingham Alabama.
