Leather and brass wire wrapped handle. Chased brass pommel chased brass knuckle bow and cupped guard. Metal scabbard with brass fittings. Marked on the drag ''6'' and SWP. Condition: Sword is excellent overall. Scabbard has some speckling of patina mixed with the original nickel finish.

MODEL 1850 STAFF AND FIELD OFFICERS SWORD SCABBARD AND SASH: Ornate grip with engraved pommel US shield on cap and US in guard. Original shark / rayskin grip and wire. Import 32'' blade most likely German with nice clear engravings of US eagle military motifs and foliate scroll. Metal scabbard with extra fancy engraved mounts. Sword has original officers sash still wrapped around grip faded to a nice rose color. We have not removed the sash from the grip. 38 3/4'' long overall.CONDITION: Minor areas of isolated peppering on blade sash has tears and rips but complete and intact.

A plain, unmarked blade, brass hilt with a single American eagle motif guard, and wire wrapped handle. Together with a brass mounted metal scabbard, unmarked. The blade has been soldered to the guard, and the handle has been soldered near the pommel; some discoloration noted; the tip of the blade is slightly bent. The metal scabbard with rust. N.Y.V. / March 1st 1863; the left side of the sword's 32 in. blade is etched with an American Eagle and scroll bearing the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, there is additional foliate decoration on both sides of the blade; the ricasso has a scroll engraved "Made by Ames MFG Co CHICOPEE, MASS; the pierced guard features "US" amid foliage; the grip wrapped in ray skin bound with brass wire.

Civil War era U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword and scabbard by Horstmann & Sons Captain John McCleery brass guard pierced with floral scrolls and ''US'' motif brass wire-wrapped ribbed ray skin grip slightly curved single edged blade with single wide fuller and single narrow fuller etched patriotic motifs on both sides with ''U.S.'' on left ''PLURIBUS UNUM'' and an American eagle on right marked: ''HORSTMANN/ & SONS/ PHILADELPHIA'' on ricasso ''Iron Proof'' on spine; iron scabbard with molded brass ring mountings and drag. blade L33'' overall L39'' Provenance: Charleston South Carolina private collection. Other Notes: John McCleery was born in Milton PA on April 8 1837. His parents were William McCleery and Margaret Pollock. Prior to the Civil War he attended and graduated from Princeton University. At the onset of the war he joined the 5th PA Reserves and was made Captain of ''H'' company. His immediate superior was Col.Senaca Simmons. This unit which was part of a reserve brigade headed by Gen.McCall participated in Gen.McClellan's peninsula campaign of 1862. Severely wounded in the leg during the battle of White Oak Swamp (Glendale) on June 30 1862 he was taken prisoner by the Confederates and later released in a prisoner swap. After the war he returned to Milton and married Mary Helen Marr started a law practice rose in rank to LTC in the reserves and was active in the G.A.R. Despite his war wound he lived until April 8 1907. Good. Etched blade with some spotting. Brass guard has even patina. Shagreen covered grip has losses with brass wire intact. Steel scabbard with dent on both sides between ring hangers. J. MCLEERY lightly etched on face of brass ring hanger.

TWO SWORDS WITH SCABBARDS. American 2nd half-19th century. Light cavalry sword 43.5'' in scabbard along with a field and staff officer sword 40.25'' in scabbard. Scabbord on calvary sword has two heavy dents in lower 1/3rd. Leather is cracked but strong. Blade is 36'' has a steel grey patina no pitting no name.Guard is brass wire wrap is brass. Field sword scabbord is dent free. Blade is 32'' marked W.H.Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia. Guard is brass with a brass wire wrap on the grip.

U.S. mounted Infantry officer's saber and scabbard circa 1840 brass hilt with traces of silvering carved bone grip and shell langets blade blued and gilt with two bright panels on each side; together with silvered brass scabbard. overall L37'' blade L31 1/2'' (2pcs) Provenance: Property deaccessioned from the Centennial Museum at the University of Texas at El Paso to benefit the Museum Collections Fund. (Accession #56.3.5 inked on crossguard) Purchased by Norm Flayderman Wallingford Hall Kennebunk Maine. From the most important American sword collection of Philip Medicus New York New York. Literature: Flayderman Norm AMERICAN SWORDS FROM THE PHILIP MEDICUS COLLECTION. Mowbray Publishers 1998. p.132 pl.62 #62f. Flayderman dated this sword to 1815-20 which might be a bit early. It is generally accepted now that these rather elaborate styles were popular in the 1840s. Hilt with traces of silvering small recent chip to bone grip at pommel on reverse. Blade retains 95% of blue and gilt 1'' x 1'' area of pitting on reverse just below langet. Scabbard retains 85-90% of silvering with two small dents on either side near drag. No rust on bluing. Blade tight to hilt. Scabbard original to sword.
