Harlow Ames mustered into Co. D 23rd New York Infantry on May 6 1861 and died of disease March 24 1863 at the regimental hospital. Condition: Slight fading of image.

JOSEPH ALEXANDER AMES PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A MAN Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire,1816-1872Finely executed portrait of a distinguished gentleman with full red beard and black suit standing with a cane. Ames was a famed portraitist hired to paint Pope Pius IX (1792-1878), a portrait later exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1850. His brother Nathan Ames (1826-1865) invented the first escalator.

AMES M1840 PRESENTATION SWORD, GEO. B. COOK Ames Model 1840 "off to war" presentation sword, presented to Union soldier, George B Cook, the sword is inscribed "Presented to 1st Lieutenant George B. Cook, co II, 4th regiment Conn. volunteer, by friends at home, New London (Conn) June, 1861", having a shagreen and wire wrapped handle with a knight head pommel, acanthus leaf stamped collar, on top of two cast eagles with spread wings and shields below, the blade etched on both sides with period designs, including florals, acanthus, and patriotic symbols, as well as an eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch and arrows, below 12 stars and 15 rays, together with the original ornately mounted scabbard. Note: George B. Cook enlisted and was mustered into the first regiment, Connecticut volunteers, heavy artillery on May 22, 1861 as a First Lieutenant, he was promoted to Captain on November 8, 1861; and Major on January 22, 1863, he mustered out on May 4, 1865. Approximate measurements: blade is l. 31. 5", overall length l. 38. 5", with scabbard l. 40. 5"
