American school 19th century portrait of john stuart patterson at sixteen Unsigned, but inscribed "John Stuart Patterson at about the age of 16 about the year AD1828," graphite on paper, tipped into family Bible, printed by Matthew Carey , Philadelphia, 1802. The Bible also contains family photographs, the leather binding printed "This Book was purchased anno domini in the year of our Lord 1805 by Sam'l Patterson. Sept. 25th" and "This book was rebound by Andrew Stuart Patterson May 1901." The Bible also contains many entrees concerning the family history,. 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. PROVENANCE: John Stuart Patterson was born February 19, 1812, the son of Samuel and Mary Stuart Patterson. His family had a business "Patterson & Duncan Dealers in Fancy and Staple Dry Goods, Corner of Main & Pearl St. Cincinnati, Ohio." He married Emily Amanda Ball and fathered three children. He died at Fordham, New York City April 3 1886 and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery Long Island.
