SPRINGFIELD RIFLE-MUSKET 1863. Type I .58 caliber 40'' round barrel and darkly stained wood stock. Barrel is marked ''1863'' in front of tang and ''V ''over ''P'' just left of tang on barrel. Behind hammer on lock plate marked ''1863''. U.S. Springfield and eagle stamped in front of hammer. Eagle is also stamped on the breech plug. Stock has dings scratches and discoloration which is consistent with age. Bore shows light rust. Hammer lock and trigger mechanism are strong. Parts look original.

Parkerized finish barrel dated 6-28 stock marked on left side SADAL in a box circle P aft of the triggerguard and C1 over 171 on right side of the butt; bolt marked NS. Condition: Very good to near excellent overhauled condition with an excellent bore.? The stock has been cleaned and has a red stained finish applied.?There are two small tight cracks in the stock at the top and bottom tangs.

Clean bore rifling visible though weak strong action. Eagle and US Springfield on lockplate. V P Eagle head proof marks on barrel. Square cartouche on left side of stock. Dark grey-blue patina on barrel stock has some dings. Lettering is slightly faded though quite legible. A nice clean gun.

All mounts are of brass and the stock is fitted with a 9 1/4" ringbar and ring on the left side. Ramrod swivels have been replaced by a sleeved chain device, a rare varient. Model 1868 Springfield Rifle Nickel
Model 1868 Springfield Rifle Nickel Plated .50-70 caliber 32.5'' round barrel S/N 10137. Rifle is fully nickel plated. Walnut stock. These were made on a trial basis at Springfield Arsenal by the United Nickel Company Beardslee Mfg & Nickel Company. Condition: Nickel has dulled and has areas of peeling around the receiver breechblock bands and front of barrel. With some freckling. Stock with some nicks and dings still retains three cartouches on the left flat opposite of the lock. Bore has some light pitting but would clean out to better.
