RARE 39-STAR US FLAG, CIRCA 1889FromRARE 39-STAR US FLAG, CIRCA 1889From a private collection of Americana, obtained from the National Museum of Patriotism in Atlanta (which closed in 2010). This flag never officially existed. This flag would have been produced likely around the fall of 1889 by a company betting on the Dakotas' being admitted as a single state. Interestingly, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming were all added within a few short months of the Dakotas, so our flag went from 38 stars to 44 stars in just over six months. Flag measures 11" x 23", framed to 20" x 30". Fading, as shown in images. Good overall condition.

Framed 16.5" x 22.5". Provenance: Notes:Interestingly, the 42-star flag was never an official U.S. flag. North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Washington were admitted to the Union within days of each other in November 1889, bringing the number of states from 38 to 42, but star counts don't become official until the 4th of July each year. Idaho gained statehood July 3, 1890, taking the count to 43 just one day before 42 would have become the official number of stars. Flag makers, however, often did not wait for the official count and made updated flags as states were admitted.
