NEW YORK DOCUMENTS, 1756-1809Three documents, including the last will and testament of Tobias Ashfield (1756), an indenture to apprentice under a baker by Ashfield's son (1770) and court summons from 1809, signed by the sheriff of New York, Benjamin Ferris. The papers all have unmended splits.
Provenance: Obtained directly from a collection of historical paper items -- from the Ashfield, Skaats and McNeal families of New York -- none of which has ever been offered for sale. Several lots of these papers, including historically important pieces, are being offered in today's auction. The family, represented in several of the items in the collection, owned land directly adjacent to Wall Street, and some of the pieces refer to these parcels.

I had no idea in the world that you had any business outside polo, But it was a relief to know there was one Polo man that at least retained some degree of business, Now that old insurance racket is a great thing. They all think there [sic] house is going to burn, but they are seldom ever lucky enough to have it happen…my wife has a nephew…(who) has worked in this same business out in the buckwheat belt, and those old babies are hard to talk out of a premium even if they see the blas [sic] headed toward the hay mound…", signed "Will Rogers" in brown ink, 11 x 8-3/8 in.; with two studio photographs of Rogers, each a print with his signature in image, 6-3/4 x 4-7/8 in. and 9-1/2 x 7-1/2 in.
