1949 NFL brass trophy football,
1949 NFL brass trophy football, on walnut base with applied engraved brass plaque, awarded to Earl "Greasy" Neale, coach of the 1949 World Champion Philadelphia Eagles, from Jim Clark, President of the club. From Wikipedia: By the late 1940s, head coach Earle "Greasy" Neale (NFL HOF member) and running back Steve Van Buren led the team to three consecutive NFL Championship Games, winning two of them in 1948 and 1949. Those two championships mark the Eagles as the only NFL team ever to win back-to-back championships by shutouts, defeating the Chicago Cardinals, 7–0, in 1948 — in a blizzard — and the Los Angeles Rams, 14–0, in 1949. The 1949 National Football League championship game was the 17th annual title game for the NFL. It was played on December 18, 1949 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. The game is remembered for the driving rain that caused the field to become a mud pit. The attendance for the game was 27,980. The game featured the Eastern Division champion Philadelphia Eagles (11-1), who were also the defending NFL champions, against the Los Angeles Rams (8-2-2), winners of the Western Division. This was the first NFL title game played in Los Angeles. The Rams had last appeared in a title game in 1945 when the franchise was still in Cleveland. Game summary: First Quarter: No Scoring *Second Quarter -Phil- Pihos 31 yard pass from Thompson (Patton kick) 7-0 PH. * Third Quarter: Phil-Skladany 2 yard block punt return (Patton kick) 14-0 PHI. Fourth Quarter: No Scoring. The inside of the base of the ball is marked "Mfg by Dodge Inc/Chicago" generally very good condition, 3 small dents in body of ball. In the 1940's, Dodge, Inc., was the world's largest trophy manufacturer. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the present owner.
Estimate $2,000-3,000
