JAN PAWLOWSKI OIL ON CANVAS "MAINJAN PAWLOWSKI OIL ON CANVAS "MAIN STREET, NANTUCKET"Jan Pawlowski (Polish/American b. 1949) Oil on Canvas "Main Street, Nantucket" , depicting a view down Main Street looking towards the Hub, signed lower left, Jan Pawlowski, in molded gilt frame
30 in. x 20.5 in. Overall 37 in. x 30.5 in.
Jan Pawlowski was born in Poland in 1949 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1979, he was awarded his “authorization and certification” by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in Warsaw, the ultimate achievement for Polish artists. The award is a judgment of technique, as well as of indefinable artistic values, such as the ability of the work to be seen and felt but not necessarily explained. Immediately after this recognition, Jan was in demand for numerous individual and collective exhibitions. He lived in Paris for two years and has worked in Italy, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Germany, Switzerland, and Holland. He spent 1987 and 1988 in Worcestershire, England, where he had a one-man show.
Pawlowski arrived in the United States in 1988 for a short vacation, which stretched into a longer stay. The country fascinated him. He has painted extensively in Boston, Nantucket, Palm Beach, Naples, New York and Palm Springs. Enjoying the wide open spaces of the country and painting in the style of plein air painters, he records what he sees at the moment by capturing the “here and now,” the immediacy of the fleeting present. Remarkably, this ability is also reflected in his portrait work. Jan if often quoted as saying “Only nature can bring truth to the canvas. One learns technique in school, but one learns truth from nature. Truth is ‘what is.’ Art captures the brief moment of nature’s being.”
