Good Chinese Eight-Panel Coromandel Screen, fourth quarter 19th century, in two sections of four panels each, the black ground carved and colored with a continuous scene of court life with scenes of officials, courtesans, musicians and children in pavilions and idealistic gardens bordered at the top with a series of fans and at the bottom with archaic vessels with an inner border of dragons, the reverse with scenes of native flowering plants and birds bordered by a "cracked ice" border with plum blossoms, h. 95", w. of each panel 17-1/4".

Below the primary scene are a variety of floral designs. The reverse of the screen bears a bird-and-flower scene and eight individual landscapes.
Each panel measures 69" x 12 1/4".
Condition
There is a considerable amount of wear across the eight panels, including losses and cracking to the lacquer, as well as general grime and staining.
