IMPORTANT ENGRAVING, LOUISBOURG,
IMPORTANT ENGRAVING, LOUISBOURG, DATED 1771After Richard Paton (English 1717-1791), coloured engraving dated 1771 by Pierre -Charles Canot, RA (1710-1777), "The burning of the Prudent and taking of the Bienfaisant in Louisbourg Harbour, Cape Breton, 1758". This rare and historically important engraving shows the capture of Louisbourg by Admiral Bascawen, supported by General Amherst with his ground troops. Here we see the Prudent ablaze in Louisbourg harbour after Capt. Laforey and Balfour found her aground and were obliged to burn her. This historical event was the beginning of the Seven Years' War, and led to the subsequent British campaign to capture Quebec in 1759. Condition: entirely original condition, not laid down, full plate mark on all sides, 3 or 4 slight marginal tears just entering plate mark, but not entering engraved surface. Print is in exceptional condition for its age. (Original sold by Christie's, Lot 59, 1 April 2015 for $96,232 USD). 16" x 23" at sight.
