RICHARD BUTLER, ALS TO ANTHONY WAYNE, 1780 Richard Butler (1743-1791, native of Ireland, gunsmith, pioneer in Ohio before the war, distinguished service during the war including service in Morgan's Rifles and as Col. in the 9th Pa. Regiment; killed at the Defeat of St. Clair, Nov. 1791) autograph letter, signed, dated at Camp, (in New Jersey), June 5, 1780, to Gen. Anthony Wayne and docketed in his handwriting; 1 p., folio, 13 x 8 in.; mentioning a meeting with Washington and his family, with comments on conflicts between officers as they related to Wayne, and with news about recruiting troops. Soon after, Butler would be involved in repelling the British advance against the Continental army encamped near Morristown.

An Aesthetic Pine Walnut and Minton Tile Shipping Trunk late 19th c. labeled in script on lid "General D. Butterfield Albany Building Corner 51st and Broadway New York City from S. Dering Utica; lift-top lid void interior paneled sides inset with large Minton tiles reeded corners blocked feet casters height 22 in. width 51 in. depth 24 in. Note: Union Major General Daniel Butterfield was wounded at Gettysburg and Gaines Mill and was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his service at Gaines Mill. A special bugle call he composed for his brigade is thought to possibly be the origination of "Taps". He was also notorious as Hooker's chief of staff for maintaining a headquarters described as a "combination of a bar and a brothel". Butterfield is buried in one of the most ornate monuments of the West Point Cemetery.
