VICTOR VASARELY (FRENCH/HUNGARIAN, 1906-1997)VICTOR VASARELY (FRENCH/HUNGARIAN, 1906-1997) "VEGA PAL V" 1971 Screenprint. Signed 'V. Vasarely' (lower right) and numbered '224/267' (lower left). Published by Denise Rene. Printed by Arcay. Reference: Benavides 158.Artist BioVictor Vasarely (Hungarian, 1906-1997)
Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian French artist, who is widely accepted as a grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Vasarely was trained as an artist in Budapest in the Bauhaus tradition. In 1930 he left Hungary and settled in Paris, where he initially supported himself as a commercial artist but continued to do his own work. During the 1930s he was influenced by Constructivism, but by the 1940s his characteristic style of painting animated surfaces of geometric forms and interacting colors had emerged. Vasarely’s style reached maturity in the mid-1950s and 1960s when he began using brighter more vibrant colors to further enhance the suggestion of movement through optical illusion.
TIFFANY & CO. LAP-OVER-EDGE STERLINGTIFFANY & CO. LAP-OVER-EDGE STERLING SILVER FLATWARE Japanese, in the aesthetic taste. Lap-over-edge with conventional decoration, etched with different fish, birds, flowers, foliage, and insects. Marked 'Tiffany & Co.', circa 1890. Total - 224 pieces. Weighable - 238 troy ounces.
Note: Designed by Charles Grosjean in the Aesthetic style, Lap Over Edge was unique as every handle of the service was decorated with a different flower, fish, animal or insect. The designs for much of the decoration were inspired by Japanese design books and wood-block prints. Lap Over Edge is considered one of Tiffany & Co.'s most daring and innovative flatware patterns. The high costs of finishing each piece individually meant that this service was never intended for the mass market, but was produced as an exclusive line for the wealthiest Americans.
