EGYPTIAN EARLY DYNASTIC STONE BOWL -EGYPTIAN EARLY DYNASTIC STONE BOWL - BEAUTIFUL COLORS!Ancient Egypt, Early Dynastic Period, 1st to 2nd Dynasty, ca. 3100 to 2686 BCE. A beautiful bowl, skillfully hand-carved from stone to display a round yet stable base and thick walls that taper to a slender, circular rim above a shallow basin. The elegant vessel boasts a gorgeous natural decoration from the banding and inclusions of the stone, displaying cream-hued striations against a coral pink surface. Smooth walls and vibrant colors grant this example an impressive presentation! Size: 2.3" Diameter x 0.9" H (5.8 cm x 2.3 cm)
This stone dish was perhaps made for offering and would have been placed into a tomb - indeed, Egyptians had been placing stone vessels in elite tombs from as early as the Naqada I culture (ca. 4400 to 3000 BCE). Stone vessels like this one were created to contain valuable items - food, beverages, unguents, perfumes - and the vessels themselves were similarly valuable, ornamental and luxury objects. The extraction of stone from mines, the transportation of it from mines to workshops, and the craftsmanship required to make such beautiful items caused vessels like this one to be quite expensive, and only the most elite individuals in society could afford them. As a result, most have been found in the Early Dynastic royal necropolis of Abydos and in cemeteries in Memphis.

20TH C. PUEBLO BLACKWARE BOWL, MARIA20TH C. PUEBLO BLACKWARE BOWL, MARIA & SANTANA MARTINEZ...Native American, southwest United States, New Mexico, northwest of Santa Fe, San Ildefonso Pueblo, ca. 1943 to 1954 CE. Signed "Marie + Santana" on base by Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887 to 1980) and Santana Martinez (1909 to 2002). An elegant ceramic bowl fired to a lustrous black hue with a horizontal band of matte triangle and steppe designs encircling the exterior. The squat vessel displays a wide hip with a rounded shoulder and an inward-curving rim. The San Ildefonso Pueblo is synonymous with the pottery of Maria Martinez. Her signature style became so popular that its sales actually helped stabilize the isolated, drought ridden, over-logged, and influenza-ridden pueblo and many of the surrounding pueblos as well. Size: 8.8" Diameter x 3.7" H (22.4 cm x 9.4 cm)
As a child, Maria learned to make pottery from her aunt. In 1904 she married to Julian Martinez, and the pair made a fabulous team. Maria created the pottery, and Julian painted the designs. They are best known for the creation of a new style of pottery in 1918-19, the matte painted highly polished "black-on-black” style. They also perfected a redware style in 1924. Maria signed her work "Marie" because she thought the name Marie had a greater appeal to non-Indigenous purchasers. As pottery was considered a woman's job in the Pueblo, Maria left out Julian's signature from pieces he had decorated to respect the Pueblo culture until 1925. After Julian passed away, Maria continued to make pottery which was painted by her daughter-in-law Santana (1909-2002) and later by her son, Popovi Da (1923-1971). Maria received numerous awards for her pottery and was the featured subject of several books including "Maria the Potter of San Ildefonso" by Alice Marriot and "The Legacy of Maria Poveka Martinez" by Richard Spivey.

EGYPTIAN ALABASTER CYLINDER VESSEL,EGYPTIAN ALABASTER CYLINDER VESSEL, EX SOTHEBY'S**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Egypt, Early Dynastic Period, 1st to 2nd Dynasty, ca. 3150 to 2686 BCE. A gorgeous vase of a slender form that is hand-carved from alabaster - a cylindrical form with an everted rim and slightly flared body. The Egyptians were master carvers and used the abundant stone deposits in the Nile Valley and the Eastern Sahara throughout their history to fashion sculptures, vessels, and monumental buildings. Alabaster was a precious material, widely traded in the region from the 4th millennium BCE onward, and if carved carefully, the semi-opaque stone often glowed when backlit. The perfect symmetry of this example demonstrates their skill, and such alabaster vessels were often personal items and were frequently buried with their owners. Size: 3.2" W x 5.2" H (8.1 cm x 13.2 cm)

EGYPTIAN OLD KINGDOM MARBLE JARAncientEGYPTIAN OLD KINGDOM MARBLE JARAncient Egypt, Old Kingdom Period, 3rd to 6th Dynasty, ca. 2686 to 2181 BCE. An elegant marble jar of a squat form with a round yet stable base, a broad shoulder, and an inward-curving rim, all naturally adorned with mottled hues of cream, ash gray, charcoal, and black. The exterior has been polished to be generally smooth, but the interior surface gives a better understanding of the rough material that the artisans had to work. Stone vessels like this example were common in burials from the Predynastic period and throughout the Old Kingdom, marking the greatest period of production of stone vessels in Egyptian history. During the Old Kingdom, there was a move away from larger "real vessels" to more petite, model ones since, according to the Egyptian principle of magical substitution, models of objects that were required for the spirits of the dead throughout eternity would be just as effective as the larger originals, while also being more affordable and easier to manufacture. Size: 3.6" Diameter x 1.3" H (9.1 cm x 3.3 cm)
The ritual of offering for the dead was central to the function of the tomb. Real food would be left with the burial, but this of course could not be provided in sufficient quantities to supply the dead for ever. The mere existence of the model vessels, together with depictions of some of the offerings (even if just in hieroglyphs), was enough for the continued provision of sustenance to be assured.
Stone jars of a similar form have been found at the Menkaura (Mycerinus) Valley Temple in Giza and are now located at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts under accession numbers 11.339 and 11.341.
