JAN VAN RIEBEECK LOVING CUP - ROYAL
JAN VAN RIEBEECK LOVING CUP - ROYAL DOULTONFrom Men of History Series.
With the growth of the spice trade, the Dutch East India Company decided in 1648 to establish a foothold at the Cape of Good Hope and chose as commander a young ships surgeon, Jan Van Riebeeck. On Christmas Eve 1651 he set sail with his wife and son on the Dromedarius accompanied by two support ships, dropping anchor below Table Mountain on April 6th 1652. Van Riebeeck, a resolute and energetic man, was ordered to build a fort and provide fresh water, vegetables and meat to passing ships. To prevent contact with the natives he built a hedge of bitter almonds around the settlement, the remains of which can still be seen. When he left ten years later, the base was well established and a small group of settlers had been given permission to start farming the land for themselves. The loving cup shows the first settlers rowing to shore from the ships, which are anchored below Table Mountain. On the reverse Jan Van Riebeeck is praying before the Dutch national flag at the Cape. The handles are modeled as full-length figures of Van Riebeeck, and on the base is Landing at the Cape of Good Hope 1652. The achievement of this mission marked the beginning of the great Dominion which is now the Union of South Africa. Royal Doulton backstamp. #Ceramic #England #Vase #Dickens

DAVID STONE (1922-2001) "JAPANESE
DAVID STONE (1922-2001) "JAPANESE LAND", ORIGINALDavid K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Japanese Land on New Guinea" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Japanese Land on New Guinea 1942 stamps issued March 8, 1992.
Seeking new territories to add to its East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Japan inched island by island toward its ultimate goal -- Australia. New Guinea, the second largest island in the world, loomed wide on Japan's covetous horizon as a possible launch site for its Australian campaign. On March 8, the invasion of New Guinea commenced. Amphibious landings on Huon Gulf's coastal airfields dispatched Japanese troops which moved toward Port Moresby, a southern outpost only 300 miles from Australia's northern coast. The Japanese met only token ground resistance but ultimately failed to achieve their goal. A bolstered Allied air and ground offensive ultimately ensured the reconquest of New Guinea and blocked Japan's territorial expansion in the South Pacific.

- We recommend looking into shipping quotes prior to bidding, shipping quotes can take up to a week or more post-sale as we host our auctions through multiple online platforms and shipping can become backlogged, if you would like a list of local shippers please email us directly.
- Our auction catalogs are hosted through multiple online platforms along with phone and in-house bidding. Bids placed on other platforms are not shown through this catalog. Because of this, even if it appears you are the only absentee bid or bidder on a lot, you may already be outbid or may have placed a bid equal to another bidder. Therefore, we always recommend bidding live.
