THE JOURNAL WAS KEPT BY CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH TABER WHOSE PORTRAIT IS OFFERED IN THIS AUCTION. THE SHIP WAS BUILT IN ROCHESTER, MASS (NOW MATTAPOISETT). THIS JOURNAL CONTAINS 2 VOYAGES. ONE IS FROM 1839-1841. THIS VOYAGE WENT TO THE INDIAN OCEAN, PACIFIC OCEAN AND NEW ZEALAND. THEY TOOK 215 BARRELS OF SPERM OIL AND 3130 BARRELS OF WHALE OIL. THE SECOND VOYAGE IS A PARTIAL FROM 1841-1844. IT BEGINS ON OCTOBER 21, 1841 AND ENDS AUGUST 3, 1844. THIS CONTAINS ONLY 31 PAGES. MOST OF 1841, 1842 & 1843 ARE MISSING HOWEVER IT WAS KEPT BY CAPTAIN JOHN TABER AND CONTAINS NUMEROUS WHALE STAMPS. THIS LOT ASO COMES WITH AN INWARD FOREIGN MANIFEST FOR THE SHIP "GOOD RETURN" DATED MAY 27, 1839. IT STATES THAT 35,000 POUNDS OF SPERM OIL WERE TAKEN. 17" X 13", SOME STAINING. *Hunter Arms Co. L.C. Smith Grade II Double-Barrel Shotgun 12 ga. 30" barrels choked F/F S/N 313076. Blue/case colored finish walnut checkered English-style stock splinter forearm extractors 1907 date of mfg. Condition: Excellent refinished condition with excellent bores. It retains all of the restoration quality finish and the stocks are excellent. The metal surfaces with the exception of some pitting on the bottom of the barrels at the breech are smooth with crisp markings. This is an attractive and affordable American double gun.
