- FINE PAIR OF GEORGE III PAINTED AND
FINE PAIR OF GEORGE III PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT ROSEWOOD AND SATINWOOD CONSOLE TABLES, ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS SHERATON33 1/2 x 42 x 16 1/2 in.
Note: These consoles are similar to a design by Thomas Sheraton: 'As pier tables are merely for ornament under a glass, they are generally made very light and the style of finishing them is rich and elegant. Sometimes the tops are solid marble, but most commonly veneered in rich satin, or other valuable wood, with a cross-band on the outside, a border about two inches richly japanned, and a narrow cross-band beyond it to go all round...stretching-rails have of late been introduced to these tables, and it must be owned that it is with good effect...as they take off the long appearance of the legs...' (see Sheraton, Thomas, 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book', published 1794, Appendix, 'Pier Tables', pages 8 and 9, Plate IV). Sheraton (1751-1806) moved to London around 1790 where he lived for a while at No 41 Davies Street and worked in Wardour Street. His books, published for subscribers in 42 bi-weekly instalments over the years between 1791 and 1794, were extremely influential in shaping the style for Neo-Classical furniture of the time. As a teacher of drawing and architecture he stressed the importance of perspective. He later was ordained as a Baptist minister and left only one known signed piece of furniture, dying in poverty.

- RACHEL JACKSON PORTRAIT MINIATURE19th
RACHEL JACKSON PORTRAIT MINIATURE19th century miniature portrait of Rachel Donelson Jackson (1767-1828), wife of President Andrew Jackson. Mrs. Jackson is depicted in a black dress with white sheer lace collar and bonnet with mantilla. Watercolor on ivory, housed in an oval beaded gilt metal frame (likely later) with gilt mat. Sight - 2 3/8" x 1 3/4". Framed - 3 3/4" x 3". Circa 1830. This lot is accompanied by a 1942 biographical booklet on Rachel Jackson by Nellie Treanor Stokes, published by the Ladies Hermitage Association. Rachel Jackson (1767-1828) moved with her family from Virginia to Tennessee as an adolescent (her father, John Donelson, is recognized as the co-founder of Nashville). Her first marriage ended in a divorce of controversial timing, which led to scandal during her second husband, Andrew Jackson's, presidential campaign. Jackson was elected, but Rachel died of a heart attack shortly before the inauguration. Throughout their marriage, Rachel kept a fairly low profile and spent most of her time in Nashville, running the Jacksons' home, The Hermitage. Partly as a result of that, her sudden death, and a fire at the Hermitage in 1834, very few portraits of her exist. According to the book "Andrew Jackson: A Portrait Study," by James G. Barber, only three life portraits of Rachel are known to have been painted: two oil on canvas portraits (painted in 1825 and 1827, both by Ralph E.W. Earl, both now in the collection of The Hermitage), and one miniature portrait (artist unknown). That miniature is assumed to have been destroyed in the fire. It was referred to in a Jackson letter in 1813, but in 1842, he noted he had no likeness of Rachel or himself from their early years. Only three post-mortem miniatures are mentioned in Barber's book, all based on the 1827 Earl portrait. Jackson commissoned one of them in 1830 from James B. Longacre, but Jackson angrily sent it back to Longacre when he felt it did not convey Rachel's likeness (whereabouts currently unknown). Jackson gave the second miniature portrait (circa 1830-1831), to his granddaughter, Rachel Jackson Lawrence as he lay dying (it is now in the collection of The Hermitage). That miniature is signed by Louisa Catherine Strobel, but for many years was misattributed to Anna Peale. Barber's book states that the third miniature, "now unlocated," was also misattributed to Anna Peale. In 1941, Fanny O. Walton, who acquired it from her cousin John Lawrence (son of Rachel Jackson Lawrence) offered it for sale to the Ladies Hermitage Association. But the LHHA declined to buy it, believing they already had a Peale miniature. (ref. Barber, p. 229). We believe this is that portrait. Provenance: acquired by consignor from the estate of a Jackson family member. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

- GEORGE E. HUGHES O/B SATURDAY EVENING
GEORGE E. HUGHES O/B SATURDAY EVENING POST COVER ART IL...George E. Hughes (Vermont/New York, 1907-1990) oil on board illustration painting for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, August 2, 1952 edition, titled "Couples at the Beach," featuring a bird's eye view of beachgoers of various ages, enjoying a sunny day under colorful umbrellas. Signed "Hughes" lower left corner. Housed in a painted wooden frame. Sight: 29 5/8" H x 23 3/4" W. Framed: 34 1/4" H x 28 1/2" W. Note: The editorial for the Aug. 2, 1952 edition stated the following about this cover illustration: "In the winter, people buy sun lamps to get sun, and in the summer they buy beach umbrellas to keep the sun off. But these are carefree vacation days, let's not worry about this, or indeed anything else - except maybe whether that creeping baby plans to bite the dog. (We just phoned Artist Hughes to inquire about that, but nobody answered, so probably he's lying on this beach himself, too modest to move into the picture.) Well, have a wonderful time, folks; build your sand castles and your dream castles; let the cool winds and the hot dogs renew you; and don't even let annoyment creep in if that boy's radio prevents your hearing the sweet nothings he whispers to his girl. Now turn the page, before the kids start throwing sand." Artist biography: Raised in New York City, the young George Hughes attended courses in the National Academy of Design and the Art Student's League. He began working as a freelance illustrator for the fashion industry in Vanity Fair and House and Garden magazines. After a stint in Detroit working in the automotive industry, Hughes returned to the city to work for the Charles E. Cooper Studio until his discovery in 1942 by Ken Stuart, the Art Director of The Saturday Evening Post. He moved his family to Arlington, Vermont, and found great success, cultivating a rich portfolio of illustrations for the Post alongside a neighbor, friend, and humorous artistic tormentor, Norman Rockwell. Other than Rockwell, Hughes was the most prolific artist for the Post, and his illustrations were included in other publications such as Reader's Digest and Good Housekeeping. (adapted from "George Hughes", THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, October 29, 2014)
