THOMAS SCOTT O/C PAINTING OF A
THOMAS SCOTT O/C PAINTING OF A HORSE IN LANDSCAPEThomas James Scott (American/Pennsylvania/Kentucky, 1824-1888) oil on canvas portrait painting of a brown horse in profile standing in a landscape with trees and rolling hills in the background. Signed "T.J. Scott" lower left. Housed in a stained wood frame with gadroon-molded edge. Sight: 17 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 21" H x 27" W. Biography: Thomas J. Scott had the good fortune to attend Central High School in Philadelphia, where his Graphics Professor was the noted portraitist Rembrandt Peale. Scott graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in 1846 but moved to Kentucky by 1856, where he studied with Edward Troye, one of the first American painters to specialize in animal subjects. Scott painted horses for the most important early turfmen in Kentucky including Dr. Elisha Warfield, John M. Clay, James Grinstead, and Major B.G. Thomas, as well as for clients around the United States. The Civil War disrupted Scott's animal portrait commissions. During the war he served as a Union Hospital Steward with the 21st Kentucky Infantry Regiment. After the war ended, he moved to Pennsylvania and became a writer and correspondent for the sporting journal, "Turf, Field, and Farm". He eventually returned to Kentucky where he died in 1888. Scott is buried in Lexington, Kentucky at the Military Cemetery. (Sources: AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art).

LARGE CHINESE NEOLITHIC LIANGZHU
LARGE CHINESE NEOLITHIC LIANGZHU STONE CONG CARVING**First Time At Auction**
China, late Neolithic, Liangzhu period to Shang Dynasty, ca. 2500 to 1046 BCE. A stunning ritual item known as a "cong" that is hand-carved from a greenstone. The rectangular form features layered, relatively angular edges incised with delicate linear and spiraling motifs, and the circular main body features a wide central hole that was drilled inwards from both sides. The asymmetrical drill markings can still be seen within the body to show exactly how this cong was formed. The meticulous carving process has also created incredibly smooth surfaces across the entirety of the artifact. Stone items like this one formed part of the decoration of these tombs and seem to have been reserved for the most elite people in society, and clearly had great significance, but meaning and purpose of congs remains a mystery. Size: 4.25" Diameter x 5.75" H (10.8 cm x 14.6 cm)
During the Shang dynasty, members of the royalty were accompanied in the afterlife by their bronzes, ceramics, weapons, amulets, and stone carvings such as this cong. The funerary function of congs like this example probably had a religious connotation. Some scholars of Chinese Neolithic history and anthropology posit that the cong is "…based on the ancient Chinese notion that earth was square and heaven round, while the hole in the object represents the passage connecting heaven and earth." (Weichao, Yu. "A Journey into China's Antiquity - Volume 1: Palaeolithic Age - Spring and Autumn Period." National Museum of Chinese History, Beijing, China, 1997, p. 80)

CHINESE SHANG DYNASTY JADE CONG /
CHINESE SHANG DYNASTY JADE CONG / RITUAL ITEM**Originally Listed At $1500**
East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1558 to 1046 BCE. A hand-carved ritual funerary item known as a "cong" that is hand-carved from mottled forest-green nephrite jade. The intriguing implement features a cylindrical interior cavity with a thick rim as well as a relatively rectangular body with 4 projecting corners on each end and sharp edges along its length. The asymmetrical drill markings can still be seen within the body to show exactly how this cong was formed - and pebbles are lodged inside a lip created from this process. Size: 4.25" L x 2.5" W (10.8 cm x 6.4 cm)
During the Shang dynasty, members of the royalty were accompanied in the afterlife by their bronzes, ceramics, weapons, amulets, and ornaments, and even the human and animal entourage that surrounded them in life. Jade items like this one formed part of the decoration of these tombs and seem to have been reserved for the most elite people in society. The funerary function of nephrite jade congs like this example probably had a religious connotation.
