CA. 1887 TULSA, OKLAHOMA FIRST 4TH OF JULY PARADEThis is an interesting and rare original photograph of the first Fourth of July celebration in Tulsa, Oklahoma circa 1887, the year Tulsa was founded by photographer B.M. Grathap to be used as a newspaper cover photo. The image shows a parade with a twelve team steer driven wagon covered with soldiers, families, businessmen, and cowboys waving flags, playing instruments with the residence onlooking an a few small buildings of Tulsa in the background. Tusla, Oklahoma was founded in 1887. The back is marked in pencil graphite, “Tulsa Fourth of July Celebration a few years ago. Make cut 15 inches wide and full page length. Return to Mrs. B.M. Grathap 244 U.S. Owasso, OK. July 4-1887 First Celebration in Tulsa.” Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 8” by 5”. The image is clear with a small hole in the boudoir card at a few places and some small loss to the edges. Historic photo. Only example known to exist.
