MARAJOARA CREAM-SLIPPED OLLA W/
MARAJOARA CREAM-SLIPPED OLLA W/ GEOMETRIC MOTIFS**Originally Listed At $1500**
Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Lower Amazon Basin, Marajo Island, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A beautiful hand-built vase with a planar base, a wide body which gradually tapers inwards, a thick everted rim, and a deep interior cavity. The body is adorned with a dense decorative register of abstract incised geometric motifs, and a contiguous set of incised parallel border lines encloses each shape. The areas surrounding the geometric embellishments are colored with a chalky-white pigment which imbues the vessel with an elegant, uncomplicated bi-chrome presentation. Funerary urns like this example were used to hold the remains of a deceased individual, acting as an informal coffin for burial. Size: 7.5" W x 9.625" H (19 cm x 24.4 cm).
The Marajoara – also known as the Marajo – flourished on Marajo Island in the mouths of the Amazon and Tocantins River in Brazil. They built impressive mounds – ranging from 3 to 10 meters in height - and lived subsistence lifestyles. This was a large-scale civilization, contrary to what many European researchers believed of the Amazon before their discovery, as some sites cover more than 10 square kilometers and contain 20 to 30 individual mounds.
The Marajoara thrived on their island while producing what is generally regarded as the oldest ceramic artform in Brazil – indeed among the oldest forms in the Americas – with numerous decorative traditions and techniques which developed over time. Beginning with the Ananatubas, the oldest potters of the island dating from the 1st millennium BCE, several unique ceramic traditions emerged; however, what is known as the Marajoara polychrome phase existed from about 400 to 1350 CE. Though they developed approximately fifteen different finishing techniques, one of the more stylish and interesting finishes combines red and white wash, incised detailing, excision, and painting in assorted designs similar to this example. Urns like this were buried in the many large cemeteries known from the region, and the soil conditions have preserved the human remains inside them quite well; as of yet, no formal studies have been undertaken on them, representing a potential treasure trove of information that could rewrite what we think of the ancient Amazon Basin.
For a similar example, please see Young-Sanchez, Margaret and Denise Pahl Schaan. Marajo: Ancient Ceramics from the Mouth of the Amazon. Mayer Center for Pre-Columbian & Spanish Colonial Art at the Denver Art Museum, 2011, p. 36, fig. 24.

TAIRONA POTTERY FIGURAL OCARINAS W/
TAIRONA POTTERY FIGURAL OCARINAS W/ DEITY & CACIQUEPre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona culture, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A fine pair of mold-made ocarinas in figural forms. The larger whistle is incredibly detailed and in the form of a jaguar-faced shaman or deity with a massive, crescent-shaped headdress and twin serpents flanking him. The surface is decorated with incised lines, shapes, and stippling, creating a wonderful texture. An opening in the top of the headdress and center of the undecorated back and four small holes along the lower front part of the ocarina allowed the instrument to be played. The other ocarina is similar in profile but depicts a warrior or cacique (lord) seated on a crescent shaped throne, with a mouthpiece on his headdress and additional tonal holes for playing. Both ocarinas are functional and emit whistling tones. Size of larger ocarina: 3.35" L x 2.8" W (8.5 cm x 7.1 cm); smaller: 2" L x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm)

CHANCAY BICHROME VESSEL - FEMALE
CHANCAY BICHROME VESSEL - FEMALE FIGURE HOLDING FRUITPre-Columbian, Chancay culture, Peru, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. Wow! An impressive example of a classic Chancay form, a star gazer, holding a fruit, perhaps a cherimoya - a succulent fruit native to Peru as well as Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chile. Adorned in black and cream pigments, the ancient figure sits with legs drawn up before her as her arms rest on her bulbous belly, just below her pointed breasts with incised nipples and above her elaborately decorated belt. Her eccentric visage displays huge, target-motif eyes, a pointed nose with delineated nostrils, and gently parted lips, all flanked by a pair of petite ears, while 2 breast coverings rest over her shoulders. A conical headdress towers above her, opening at the top to form the mouth of the vessel as it supports the strap of a coca bag that rests on her back just below the vessel's strap-form handle. Size: 7.2" W x 14.4" H (18.3 cm x 36.6 cm)
Such large Chancay figures are usually female. The purpose of such figures is unknown; however, as they have been frequently discovered in Chancay graves, some scholars argue that they may have represented a symbolic female companion to accompany the deceased into the afterworld. This said, a few male/female pairs have been found in gravesites, hence challenging this theory of female companionship.
The Chancay people were exceptional ceramic and textile artisans, and archaeologists have often found cuchimilcos in the tombs of Chancay nobility. Some scholars believe that their outstretched hands were intended to absorb negative energy. Chancay artisans created ceramics that are quite distinctive in form and decoration - finely painted and molded with specific decorative details carefully added by hand as we see in this example.
