Fine Japanese carved lacquered and carved wood figure of K?kai - born 27 July 774 – died 22 April 835- born Saeki no Mao, posthumously called Kobo Daishi "The Grand Master who Propagated the Dharma", was a Japanese Buddhist monk, calligrapher, and poet who founded the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism. He travelled to China, where he studied Tangmi (Chinese Vajrayana Buddhism) under the monk Huiguo. Upon returning to Japan, he founded Shingon—the Japanese branch of Vajrayana Buddhism. With the blessing of several Emperors, K?kai was able to preach Shingon teachings and found Shingon temples. Like other influential monks, K?kai oversaw public works and constructions. Later written Harriet Marsden's Windsor New South Wales March 29th 1835. The Gift of her Father SM? The bible was printed in 1808.Samuel Marsden (1796-1854) came to Australia in 1821 on The Westmorland with his wife and daughter Harriet who was born on the Ship. Samuel's brother Thomas married Jane Catherine a Daughter of Rev Marsden, both Samuel and Thomas Marsden where cousins of the Rev Samuel Marsden.Harriet married Anthony Hordern of the retail firm Anthony Hordern Sydney, with this lot are photo's of both Harriet and Anthony, Harriet Died in Italy aged 52 (1820-1872) and Anthony died Sydney aged 56 (1819-1876), approx 14cm H x 8cm W.
