The New York Elevated Railroad Company was established on October 27, 1872, as a reorganization of the West Side Patented Elevated Railway Company, the pioneering attempt at building an elevated rapid transit line. It was operated under the auspices of financier and railroad magnate Jay Gould (1836-1892), who had gained control of several elevated railway lines in New York during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

October 7, 1919). Alden was an American author and editor of Harper's Magazine for fifty years. Clearly signed S. Clemens.

WAR OF 1812, HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM HOME Moses Goodman, Jr. (September 25, 1781 - November 9, 1836) was a deacon in the church of West Hartford, Connecticut, and a colonel in the War of 1812, who commanded 83 officers and men in 1814 of the Connecticut First Regiment against the British Army. He was the son of Moses Goodman (June 20, 1750 - August 17, 1831) who became famous for delivering $30,000 to George Washington's army at Valley Forge in dark brown saddlebags. This letter from his wife, Prudence Hurlbut Goodman (June 3, 1783 - September 13, 1857), illustrates what life was like at the time. The letter describes life at home and expresses a great desire for her husband to return safe. 2p.p., ALS folded into a letter and sent from Hartford Conn in a stampless envelope dated September 8th, with a 10 cent charge.

2PCS US CIVIL WAR LOVE LETTERS TO GENERAL YOUNG Contains two letters addressed to General Pierce Manning Young (1836-1896). Detailed love letters from Belle Mary confessing her love and admiration, worried she is being ignored. Letters dated May and June 1864 and speaks of a named soldier she knows that was wounded amongst much other news. At the time of the June letter General Young was deeply involved in Grant's Virginia Overland Campaign, Battle of Cold Harbour, and the Battle of Old Church, also known as Matadequin Creek, was fought on May 30, 1864. Each page measures 8"x10" and is filled with beautiful period script. Paper is folded so that there are 4 pages for the letter with one sheet.

Both in their original covers. This incredibly scarce piece (both the original and the reprint) represent an early focus by Charles Dickens on the plight of the poor.
