THE DERBY POTTERY AND GLAZED AND
THE DERBY POTTERY AND GLAZED AND BISCUIT PORCELAIN WASTERS AND SHARDS EXCAVATED DR FREEMAN FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL DIGS AT THE COCKPIT HILL AND CALVER CLOSE SITES AND THE RIVER DERWENT IN 1971 AND C
the lot including part of a saltglazed saggar, the find sites recorded (many 100s) (see back cover illustration)
This lot is primarily of interest because of the large number of pottery and porcelain wasters from the sit eof the Cockpit Hill manufactory. These include both saltglazed white and brown stoneware, plain and painted creamware, handle, knop and other forms and, most tantalising of all, porcelain with underglaze blue decoration or moulded details. The importance of this mater is underlined by Bradley (Ceramics of Derbyshire, 1978): "Unfortunately our present knowledge of the output of he factory remains very limited. Most of the shards from an early excavation of the site have been lost and nothing has been published concerning any of the finds made shortly before the whole site was redeveloped".
