  UNISSUED BRITISH-MADE CONFEDERATE SHOES England,C. 1861-65Leather English army bootees with a tall upper and leather pulls, double pegged heels, hobnails on the outer edge of the sole, marked on the sole in front if the heels "CS/A", and marked on the sole in a circle "P.C", with a roll book from the Corporal A.J. Grim Post Number 640 from Spring City, Pennsylvania, with a listing of their officers from 1905 to 1922. Note: G.A.R. Post 640 was disbanded in the early 1920s as many of the members had died. It is thought that these bootees were captured by a member of the post. There is a similar pair although with brass eyelets pictured in "Echoes of Glory: Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy," Time-Life Books, Virginia, 1991, p. 174.

  CONFEDERATE LOUISIANA FROCK COAT United States,Steel gray jean cloth body (turned a slight green cast), black worsted wool tape trimmings, large gilt Hyde & Goodrich New Orleans, Louisiana pelican buttons on the breast, cuff-size U.S. eagle dragoon buttons with no back marks on the cuffs and shoulder straps, lined in the upper body with white twilled shalloon or light serge, unlined skirts with brown polished cotton skirt pocket bags, a pair of white gloves, a daguerreotype of a New Orleans gentleman marked inside the case "F. LAW./NEW ORLEANS/LA", with a paper label on the spine of the case marked "new orleans apr. 21st 1858", and a hand-sewn black velvet silk-lined case. Note: One of the finest enlisted Confederate frock coats extant with impeccable provenance. Bought originally by the renowned pioneer Civil War collector Robert L. Miller in 1953. Comes with lengthy 1953 correspondence with Miller concerning his purchase of this rare coat. Believed to have been worn by Charles Stebbins of the 5th Louisiana who deserted and took the oath of allegiance, although further research is probably warranted.   FINE GEORGE IV GILT-METAL-MOUNTED ROSEWOOD BREAKFRONT SIDE CABINET, ATTRIBUTED TO FREDERICK APPLETREE OF BIRMINGHAMThe anthemion cast border above the black porto marble top, over a pair of grilled doors fitted with shelves, divided by columnar supports and flanked by open shelves, raised on foliate and gadrooned carved feet. 38 1/2 x 6 ft. x 16 in. Note: Godson & Coles makes the argument that this piece was made by Frederick Appletree of Birmingham for John Gibbons, Edgebaston, circa 1837. They searched the Gibbons family archives which contain a number of bills from Frederick Appletree, 47 Bull Street, Birmingham, trading as "Cabinet Maker & Upholsterer, Interior Decorator, Paper Hanger", his invoice heading states "The Trade Supplied With Seasoned Mahogany, Rosewood, Fine Veneers & Bed Pillars, Etc.". While is wasn't possible to establish which invoice from 1837 to 1842 matches this lot, they found that Gibbons was clearly engaging Appletree for much of the furnishing of his Edgbaston home and this cabinet corresponds to the furnishings Appletree was supplying. Condition The marble is cracked with associated losses, and scuffing. In good overall condition with slight wear to the varnish on the front left side. Expected wear with very minor nicks. Backboards missing on the back, may have been removed for electrical equipment (stereo). Fine quality. Structurally sound.Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
