C. A. Solinas (Italian 20th Century) Madonna with Distaff. Oil on canvas signed and inscribed "Roma" at the lower right corner apprx. 18-1/4" x 13" framed in a gilt frame with red rub overall apprx. 21-1/2" x 16-5/8". This version depicts the Virgin Mary in an architectural setting (symbolizing Mary's house) with a potted lily at one side (a symbol of the purity of the Annunciation often shown held in the hand of the Angel Gabriel messenger of Gods will to humans) a basket with an open book on the other side (possibly the Gospel of Luke or a symbol of piety) and holding the yarnwinder at her side. She wears a modest expression as she contemplates the symbols.

"Luzi" is written in pencil on the recto at the lower left corner.

FLORENTINE RELIEF STUCCO OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, FOLLOWER OF DONATELLO (1386-1466) Tabernacle of the Virgin and Child with Two Cherubs, Christ of Sorrow above in the lunette top, relief in painted stucco housed in a contemporary frame of gilt and painted wood, having gilt haloes, original hanging iron. Last half of 15th c.
46" x 28" x 4 3/4". Repaired and retouched.
The composition of this stucco is widely inspired, as Dr. Ursula Schlegel, Curator of the Sculptures Dept at the Staatliche Museum of Berlin, Dalhem, has kindly pointed out, from a prototype attributed to Donatello. (P. Hennessy - Catalogue of the Italian Sculptures in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Vol III, page 80, n 64, Madonna and Child, terra cotta relief. Other versions of the same composition are in the Museo Bardini, Florence. (Lensi: "Il Museo Bardini, Stucchi e terre-cotte", in Dedalo, vol IV, 1923-4, p. 500.
