RICHARD BUTLER, ALS TO ANTHONY WAYNE, 1780 Richard Butler (1743-1791, native of Ireland, gunsmith, pioneer in Ohio before the war, distinguished service during the war including service in Morgan's Rifles and as Col. in the 9th Pa. Regiment; killed at the Defeat of St. Clair, Nov. 1791) autograph letter, signed, dated at Camp, (in New Jersey), June 5, 1780, to Gen. Anthony Wayne and docketed in his handwriting; 1 p., folio, 13 x 8 in.; mentioning a meeting with Washington and his family, with comments on conflicts between officers as they related to Wayne, and with news about recruiting troops. Soon after, Butler would be involved in repelling the British advance against the Continental army encamped near Morristown.

CIVIL WAR GENERAL BENJAMIN BUTLER AUTOGRAPHBenjamin Franklin Butler was a Civil War Major General who went on to serve 5 terms in the House of Representatives and became the Governor of Mass. As a lawyer he had a hand in core tenets of our legal system including the "Contraband Decision" th at led to the Confiscation Acts, Militia Act, Emancipation Proclamation, and eventually the 13th Amendment. He successfully argued in front of the Supreme Court and helped establish United States Notes as legal tender, providing a US national curre ncy. The autograph appears to read Benj. F Butler Mass, found on a piece of paper with a light grid pattern and affixed to a piece of heavier paper. Approx. 4-1/4" L x 2" on a larger piece of heavier paper. Overall toning to the paper, cut edges, p encil at the top of the larger piece of paper. See images for more details on condition. This item can be shipped in-house.

Benjamin Butler Signed Envelope Benjamin F. Butler (1819-93).? Union general and Massachusetts politician.? A free franked envelope cover postmarked November 24 1869 at Lowell Massachusetts addressed to Mr. Thomas Webster of Philadelphia.Butler was a lawyer and state representative from Massachusetts before the Civil War and a very active Democrat. During the war he managed to upset Southerners to the extent that Jeff Davis declared him an outlaw and put a price on his head. After a number of failed attempts to work with Grant's forces he was removed from command. He returned to politics served in the U.S. Congress as Governor of Massachusetts and eventually became the Greenback candidate for President in 1884. Condition: The front of the envelope has been clipped from the remainder ? Light soiling smudging of postmark and slight fading of the final fe letters of Butler's signature.
