U.S. Restored M-1885 McClellan Saddle and Accessories This is an a original US McClellan?saddle seat restored around 1980 to replicate the M-1885 pattern Cavalry saddle. The work was done by Hank Kluin of?Burgess and Company Red Bank N.J. Hank passed away at an early age about two years ago; he was considered the premier Cavalry equipment historian and leather smith. His items are truly tomorrow's museum pieces today. He made all the accessories for this saddle. He made the 1885 saddle bags M-1887 carbine scabbard with brass throat the picket rope and hardware girth all straps poncho feed bag and blue and gold saddle pad. Condition: Very good to excellent.

U.S. Civil War Confederate Enlisted Man's ''McClellan'' Saddle Based upon the unusual shape of the wood tree this appeared to be made by one of the smaller Confederate saddleries and not a Federally made piece. Wood stirrup on right side void of stirrup on the left side. Condition: Fair. This saddle has potential for restoration. As is the condition of the saddle is dry and brittle and segments the saddle are dissipating. Leather skirts are in good condition.

The saddle shows heavy leather straps to the harness The condition of this calvary saddle is good with some wear and patina to the leather consistent with the age of the saddle but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this saddle is 35" x 13" x 19". The seat size is 13 1/2".

US Pre- Civil War Pattern 1847
US Pre- Civil War Pattern 1847 Grimsley Dragoon Saddle Ca 1850s. Copper nameplate in horn section reads Earle A. Royce Willsboro New York. Saddle measures 19.75'' from pommel to cantle. Leather in the seat section of the saddle is a period replacement and is void of its original quilted pattern. This was common practice to replace the quilted padded leather since by its inherent nature the padded leather did not have a long lifespan. Brass furniture throughout. Thornton Grimsley was a saddle maker in St. Louis MO. These saddles had deep-seated trees and a very high cantle that were inspired by Spanish/Mexican saddles that were popular at the time. Grimsley saddles were used by General U.S. Grant General Thomas Sherman and General Robert E. Lee. [See Caba 1982: 35-45. See also Dorsey and McPheeters 1999: 19-21.] Condition: Very good. Lacking one brass rivet on front of pommel otherwise leather is supple and is complete.
