The blue color of the ball with lots of golden dust and few whitish tufts give it the appearance of a sidereal globe with sparkling stars and clouds and makes of it a heaven of a cane. While the ball and its collar survived intact, the shaft shows some wear and ennobling age marks. -H. 1 ¾” Diameter, O.L. 32 ½” -$300-$400 -Lapis lazuli was always highly prized: In Mesopotamia this blue stone symbolized the heavens and so was used to decorate the ceilings of temples. In Egypt it was used to adorn statues of the gods, while in Europe, viewed as a cure for melancholy and fever, it was reserved for the very wealthy people and one of Fabergé’s favorite precious stones.

Lapis Lazuli and Gold Dress Cane -Ca. 1900 -Large Lapis Lazuli handle fashioned of a select single stone in a well-proportioned Derby-like Baroque shape, 18 karat yellow gold collar with hammered surface, ebony shaft and a long horn ferrule. The plain surface beautifully exposes a natural deep blue color and its perfect finish reveals the desirable, lightly dusting flecks of golden pyrite. Pleasing to the eye and with an addictive, sensuous feel to the hand, this cane has style and substance and demonstrates sophisticated cane art at its best. It is in the taste of Carl Fabergé, thought to have Russian ties and belongs to the upscale jewelry objects or Virtue. Furthermore, it epitomizes the artistic eclecticism of Imperial Russia, distills much of the follies of the Romanov days and exudes the essence of luxury. According to the previous owner this cane remained until the end 1970’s an inalienable diplomat’s family treasure, handed down through two generations, and is in pristine condition. -H. 4 ¾” x 2 ¼”, O.L. 33 ½” -$2,500-$3,500 -Lapis lazuli was always highly prized: In Mesopotamia this blue stone symbolized the heavens and so was used to decorate the ceilings of temples. ANTONI CLAVE', SPAINISH / CATALAN (1913-2005),ANTONI CLAVE', SPAINISH / CATALAN (1913-2005), WOMAN WITH CAT, LITHOGRAPHAntoni Clave', Spainish / Catalan, (1913-2005) Woman with cat, lithograph Titled lower left. Some light water stains on the bottom. Biography from Acquisitions of Fine Art: Antoni Clavé was born in Barcelona on 5 April 1913. From 1926 he attended evening courses at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja" taught by Félix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Angel Ferrant. Mongrell found Clavé a place as a house painter's apprentice in 1927 because Clavé was fascinated by the hands-on side of painting and especially by the materials used for such work and wanted to learn how to prepare paints. In 1932 Clavé stopped attending the evening classes and, on the recommendation of Illescas, an architect, was employed at the firm of Cinaes, where he designed the weekly cinema posters. On the side Clavé also worked for a children's magazine and designed advertising posters. During the Spanish Civil War Clavé served as a draughtsman for the Republican government, but at the end of the war he fled to France. After internment at Les Haras camp in Perpignan, Clavé settled in Paris in 1939, drawing comics and working as an illustrator. During the 1940s Clavé's painting showed the stylistic influence of Bonnard, Vuillard, Rouault and especially Picasso, with whom he became acquainted in 1944. Clavé's motifs at the time were scenes of tranquil domesticity tinged with melancholy, puppet-like female figures, children, clowns and harlequins. From 1946 Clavé did numerous designs for ballet and theatre in Paris, Munich, London and New York; in the 1950s he turned to book illustration. In 1954 Clavé ceased working as a stage-set designer and illustrator to devote himself entirely to painting, visiting Spain again. His paintings became more abstract and enigmatic; inspired by wall textures and graffiti, Clavé began integrating scraps of newspaper and other similar materials into his painting in a collage-like manner. In 1957 Clavé embarked on designing carpets, and from 1960 he also did sculpture. Clavé's work in the latter field includes bas reliefs, assemblages and totem-like sculptures of wood and modelled or imprinted lead, some of them incorporating objets trouvé, that are archaic in feeling. In 1965 Clavé moved to the South of France, near Saint-Tropez. Clavé's paintings became darker, many of them almost entirely black, and he used mixed techniques. The early 1980s saw the Clavé series Hommage à Picasso, followed by a series inspired by urban living in New York, which Clavé visited in 1972 and 1989. After one-man shows in museums and galleries in Zurich, Barcelona, Paris and Tokyo, Clavé was given a comprehensive retrospective at the Centre Pompidou Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1978. The Spanish pavilion at the 1984 Venice Biennale was dedicated to Antoni Clavé. lithograph

Landscape painter of the Hudson River School, John McEntee studied at the National Academy by 1850, apprenticed to Frederic Edwin Church, and was one of the charter residents of Richard Morris Hunt's Tenth Street Studio. His work was darker and more melancholy than that of most of his compatriots, which may account for his lesser degree of success.

Provenance: From a private collector in Zionsville / Indianapolis. From the Archives of AskArt: Edmund Brucker was active as a portrait painter in Indianapolis from 1938 until his death, and he recorded the likenesses of many prominent people around the state, including Dr. and Mrs. Norris Shreve, Mrs. Otis R. Bowen, and Colonel A. Weir Cook. In 1967, the artist retired from his post of almost thirty years as a professor at the Herron School of Art. Brucker represented a dwindling group of Indiana artists whose rigorous artistic training prepared them for the exactitude of portrait painter. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1912. He studied art at the Cleveland School of Art and graduated in 1934. His teachers included Henry Keller, Rolf Stoll, and Paul Travis. In 1938, Brucker joined the faculty of the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he taught until his retirement in the early 1980s. Though he was best known as a portrait painter, Brucker was also a painter of the Great Lakes regional scene. Adept in both oil and watercolor, he produced a number of paintings depicting industrial and urban subjects. Many of his works are actually composite scenes formulated from sketches and detailed drawings made at different sites at different times. Brucker's mature realist style emphasizes design, composition and line. His palette is rich in its use of gray tones. Brucker exhibited widely through the Great Lakes region. His work was shown at The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Butler Institute of American Art, Milwaukee Art Institute, Carnegie Institute, and regularly at the Hoosier Salon Annuals and the Indiana State Fair. Brucker was awarded top honors in Hoosier Salon exhibitions on three different occasions. The melancholy 1944 painting of a working class boy with a sled, which the artist entitled "Bag Ears", won a first prize award in the portrait division of the Indiana State Fair Art Exhibition the year it was submitted. As a portraitist, Edmund Brucker seemed a natural choice as artist for the official portrait of Matthew E. Welsh, Governor of Indiana from 1961 to 1965. Brucker had already painted a picture of the new governor in 1960 for the cover of "Indiana Business and Industry Magazine". The popularity of this portrait resulted in an official commission for Brucker in 1964, the last year of Welsh's term. The sittings were given by Welsh in the artist's studio at the Herron School of Art. Brucker was impressed by Welsh's co-operative manner in posing, and the governor was delighted by the result. Edmund Brucker died in Indianapolis in 1999. His work is represented in the collections of Indiana University, DePauw University, Purdue University, and Dartmouth College. oil on board Dimensions: 31"H x 25"W (frame), 23 1/2"H x 17 1/2"W (sight)

George Rodrigue (American/LouisianaGeorge Rodrigue (American/Louisiana b. 1944) "The Flowers of Susan" 1991 acrylic on canvas signed lower left signed titled and dated en verso 24 in. x 20 in. framed. Note: The woman represented in this painting is inspired by the iconic Acadian heroine Evangeline made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem of 1847. Rodrigue often painted her with the typical "black eyes" and "brown tresses" from the poem. While he used several models sitting most often was Diane Bernard Keogh the daughter of friends of the artist. The figure here is depicted here with her basket of roses as narrated in Longfellow's poem and the model's melancholy expression adds to the romantic sadness of the story of the star-crossed lovers Evangeline and Gabriel.
