PRESENTATION LANTERN. Kelly andPRESENTATION LANTERN. Kelly and Company Rochester New York 3rd quarter-19th century brass and glass. Nickel-plated brass lantern with glass globe etched with an American eagle on one side and ''General P.H. Sheridan'' on the other. 12''h. Wear to nickel finish. Sold at Sloan's (Washington DC) October 2001 lot 5. Also included is a late 19th-century printed portrait and a CDV of Sheridan. Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) was born in Albany New York but grew up in Somerset Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1853 and proved one of the Union's most noted generals during the Civil War. There is a related lantern in the collection of the West Point Museum that bears the presentation inscription to General U.S. Grant. About 10-20% of the nickel plating is present. Accompanied by a late 19th century engraved portrait of Sheridan. Has a large chip in the upper glass rim left side brasses in good condition and shows signs of old cleaning. The plater looks old but not original burner appears to be replaced. NB 8/27/12
