GERMAN 1889 OFFICER’S DEGEN
GERMAN 1889 OFFICER’S DEGEN SWORDThis is a very rare variant of the German 1889 pattern Infantry officer’s degen, or straight bladed sword. It is exactly similar to other 1889 degens, except that on its guard it has an Imperial Chinese dragon, and the scabbard is made to hang in the Russian style, or backwards to western nations’ styles. The guard is brass, with a sharkskin wrapped grip, with a strand of twisted wire. The blade is straight, with two fullers that run most of the way to the point. The blade and the scabbard are nickel plated, although the plate on the blade is worn. The name E. & F. Holler, Solingen is on the ricasso. Dimensions: blade is 32.5 inches long and the sword is 40 inches long overall. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $55.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
Condition:
Overall excellent shape, although the plate on the blade is worn and freckled. There was a leather finger loop inside the guard, but that is gone. The scabbard has minor freckling, but is quite nice. The gilt on the guard is largely intact, with some rubbing along contact points. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders. Condition: statements are only for general guidance and should not be relied upon as complete statements of fact and do not constitute a representation, warranty or assumption of liability by Witherell's. All lots are sold "AS IS" under terms and conditions.
