Sunlit Corridor Guanajuato by EugenioSunlit Corridor Guanajuato by Eugenio Landesio Eugenio Landesio (Italian 1809-1879). Oil on canvas signed l.l. and dated 1863; 11.5 x 16.5 in. (sight).Includes an original hand-written label (in French) which identifies the scene as a corridor of the house of the Mine of Mellado in Guanajuato [Mexico].On October 2 1843 General Lopez de Santa Anna (1794-1876) who was at the time President of Mexico issued a decree to reopen the National Academy of San Carlos with a revised institutional structure.? At this time Latin American academies were moving away from the Neoclassical style and moving towards academic realism.? The decree specified that there should be three noble arts studied at the school: painting sculpture and engraving.? In order to better accomplish this transition the decree also mandated that the directors and professors of these departments should be chosen from the finest artists in Europe.? In 1854 Landesio was commissioned to join the faculty and began his professorship in January of 1855 to teach courses in landscape and perspective.?Landesio an Italian native had studied at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome under the painter known as the "master of the Hungarian landscape" Karoly Marko (1793-1860).? As a student Landesio was introduced to the Spanish Catalan painter Pelegrin Clave (1811-1880).? Clave became the director of painting at the National Academy of San Carlos in 1846 and recommended Landesio for the landscape professorship in 1854.? The Academy was already familiar with Landesio's art as they had recently purchased five of the artist's landscapes after they were exhibited there in 1853 and 1854.? Landesio was strongly influenced by the French landscape artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) but after moving to Mexico he adopted a softer pastel color palette and began to focus more on the use of light to enhance the atmosphere of a scene.? As a professor he impressed upon his students the importance of light when painting landscapes.? ?He insisted that his students work from nature and master drawing before working with colors.? One of his most successful pupils was the artist Jose Maria Velasco (Mexico 1840-1912) who devoted his career to depicting the beauty of his native country in landscape paintings.?In turn Velasco would teach landscape painting to a new generation of Mexican artists.?In addition to teaching Landesio also wrote instructive texts. Landesio published two treatises during his time in Mexico:??Cimientos del artista dibujante y pintor (1866) [translation: Foundation of the Artist Illustrator and Painter] and La pintura general o de paisaje y la perspectiva en la Academia Nacional de San Carlos (1867) [translation: General Painting of Landscape and Perspective in the National Academy of San Carlos].? After spending twenty-two years in Mexico Landesio returned to Italy in 1877 and died in Rome just two years later.Landesio's landscapes of Mexico are his best-known works but many of his landscapes also feature the colonial architecture which surrounded the artist and his students.? The painting presented here is a rare example of an entirely interior scene by Landesio which exemplifies his mastery of perspective usage of light and his appreciation for detail.? Landesio showcases these skills with complex elements in the composition.? The arches at the left of the open corridor are illuminated by the sunlight and the interior space beyond the open door at the end of the corridor including a staircase.? Contributing to the sense of place in the work are tropical birds: a large parrot perched along the corridor wall and three birds in cages along the open side of the corridor. The painting brings to mind Landesio's earlier ?painting Perspectiva Tomada Desde la Antesacrist?a del Convento de San Francisco )[translation: Perspective Taken From the Sacristy of the Convent of San Francisco] (1855) which shows a large gallery space and an open corridor quite similar to the work presented.? That painting is now a part of the permanent collection of The National Museum of Art in Mexico City.?The label included with the painting presumed to be original refers to the Mine of Mellado in the Guanajuato region.? Silver mining began at Mellado in 1558 and by the end of the eighteenth century the mines in this region produced more silver than any other in the world.? The label's text is in French suggesting a connection to the occupation of Mexico by the French from 1863-1866. Condition: Craquelure relined with wax method. Small speck of inpainting upper center. Very light inpainting on right wall.
