Clauberg Non-Regulation Officer's
Clauberg Non-Regulation Officer's Sword Presented to Lt W.H. Low 33" blade. Marked at the ricasso W. Walscheio Solingen; on the reverse is a small proving mark. Shageen and wire wrapped handle.? Iron backstrap and pommel with iron guard with eagle and E. Pluribus Unum.? Metal scabbard with inscription engraved between the throat and first carrying band that reads PRESENTED TO:/W.H. LOW/1ST LT. Co. A 20TH MAINE REGT/BY THE MEN OF WATERVILLE SHOPS / APRIL 15 1862.?While the block inscription appears to be of the period National Archive records prove conclusively that W.L. Lowe (alternatively spelled Low) never served as an officer in the 20th Maine of Little Round Top fame.William H. Lowe of Waterville joined Company A 20th Maine as a corporal on August 20 1862 and was "present" with the regiment through February 1863 being promoted to sergeant the same month. Corporal Lowe is listed as "wounded in action" at Fredericksburg on December 13 1862.Subsequently Lowe was promoted to sergeant on February 4 1863 and thereafter served on detached service in New York City under Brigadier General Ullman by order of the War Department (S.O. No. 139) from March 1863. He is shown as having been "reduced to the ranks" on May 14 1863 reason not stated. Lowe never returned to the 20th Maine and is not listed on the detailed company roster in Maine at Gettysburg.Subsequent bi-monthly reports show Lowe in the Department of the Gulf having obtained a commission in Company K. 81st USCT as 1st lieutenant dated August 30 1863. Plagued by "violent attacks of intermittent fever and malaria" his tenure at Port Hudson was brief. Hospitalized unfit for duty Lieutenant Lowe applied for a surgeon's certificate of disability tendered his resignation and was discharged by S.O. No. 46 dated H.Q. Dept. of the Gulf February 20 1864.We speculate that William Lowe had expectations of receiving a commission in the 20th Maine in 1862 and thus the inscribed sword premature as it turned out given by "the men of Waterville." Lieutenant Lowe's aspirations were later realized. albeit briefly in the 81st USCT. Sold with National Archives military records. Condition: Blade still retains the original nickel finish with some storage crust. Pommel and backstrap and guard with nice dark brown patina. Scabbard with a nice dark brown patina.
