3/4 PLATE DAG OF OFFICER AND FAMILY, C. 1845Rare large 3/4 plate size daguerreotype of an officer in uniform, with his wife and four young children, circa 1845. One child is depicted reclining in her father's lap, her hands clasped in his, while two daughters flank their parents and the youngest child lays across the mother's lap. Leather covered wood case, lined in red velvet. Sight: 5-1/4" x 4-1/3". Overall 7" x 5-3/4". Note: Nine buttons are visible on the officer's coat, with the remaining ones obscured by the child in his lap. The buttons on his uniform have a distinct rim behind and around the raised central sections, which indicate he is likely a staff officer in a militia, in the Medical Service or the Paymaster Department, both of whom had two rows of 10 buttons down the front and embroidery on the collar and cuffs.
Condition:
Later mat and protective glass over it; a couple of minute dents to plate and loss of silvering at edges. Abrasions to case exterior and 1-1/2" scratch to rear of case.

CLASSICAL DESK, DEVON FARM HISTORYClassical butler's desk originally belonging to John Davis (1770-1853) of Nashville. Mahogany desk with molded rectangular top over a large overhanging drawer flanked by carved rosette panels. Top drawer has hinged fall front, and pulls out to reveal a compartmentalized interior with cubbyholes and six small drawers, and a baize-covered writing surface (worn). Three long drawers beneath, dovetailed with beaded edges and glass knobs, flanked by fully turned columns with ring turnings at top and bottom. Four ring and ball turned feet. 51 7/8" H x 44" W x 23 1/4" D. Circa 1845. MEDLEY LOUISVILLE to underside. Undated, circa 1845. 3 1/2" H (including handle). 2nd-18th items: Seventeen (17) pieces Marshall flatware, including 10 dessert spoons, all monogrammed C or CS; 4 teaspoons with assorted monograms; 2 tablespoons; and 1 salt spoon with shell bowl, also with assorted monograms. Tablespoons, salt spoon and 2 teaspoons are stamped J.C. MARSHALL in rectangles on backs (1 of the 2 teaspoons has additional pseudo hallmarks). The remaining 2 teaspoons have incuse stamps MARSHELL LOUISVILLE with star and/or flower marks. Dessert spoons all have incuse stamps MARSHELL LOUISVILLE with pseudo hallmarks. Ranging in size from 4" to 9" L. Combined weight 18.71 troy ounces.

ALEXANDER MORIN COIN SILVER TEA SET, KY CIVIL WAR INTER...Six (6) piece Alexander Morin, Philadelphia coin silver tea set, circa 1845, plus associated armorial engraved silverplated tray, seven (7) items total. By oral history, the set was originally owned by CSA Brigadier General Abe Buford of Kentucky. 1st-6th items: Coffee pot, two (2) teapots, sugar bowl, creamer, and waste bowl, each piece having a pear-shaped body with repousse floral designs surrounding foliate cartouches to each side, and scalloped foliate design to round foot. All pieces except waste bowl with naturalistic handle with floral accents; pots have acanthus design to hinged lid, teardrop shaped finial, and gooseneck spouts. All pieces except one teapot are monogrammed "Gorham"; one teapot is inscribed "Abe Buford ES Stewart J. B. Gorham 1904". All items stamped A.C. MORIN, "Philad*", and "Pure Coin" to underside. Ranging in size from 7 1/8" H x 6" W x approx. 4 5/8" D to 12 1/2" H x 10 1/4" W x approx. 6 1/4" D. Note: This tea set was the first known and published (House & Garden Summer 1974) example of works marked for the jeweler and silversmith Alexander C. Morin (working Philadelphia, c. 1813-1850). The original owner is believed to have been Abraham "Abe" Buford (1820-1884), a Confederate Brigadier General of John Buford's Third Brigade as well as commander of Forrest's Calvary Corps. The set was purchased by John Breckinridge Gorham of Cherrycote, Lexington, Kentucky at auction in 1904. 7th item: Carrington & Co. English silverplated serving tray with scalloped edges, two handles, and central emblem of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of British chivalry, with motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("Shame on him who sees harm in it"). Circa 1900. Stamped with maker's mark, "30141, and "Carrington 130 Regent St. W" to underside. 18" H x 29" W. Combined coin silver weight: 153.105 total troy ounces.

Creamer with dent measuring 3/4" x 1/2" and area of previous repair measuring 1 1/8" x 1/2"; minor bend to base. 7th item: Overall good condition with scattered surface scratches commensurate with manner of use.

Condition:
Sheets joined at center, the whole mounted to a linen back, and the surface covered in a yellow pigment, which appears to "conceal" an earlier pigment stain, a good presentation, some small losses, tears at edges, waving and buckling, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. Nearly identical chairs are documented to African American cabinetmaker Thomas Day (Milton, North Carolina, 1801-1861).
Condition:
good structural condition with minor finish distress, scattered bumps, and abrasions to frames, period slip seats (not fully examined), each chair marked in black paint "49"

Note: Peyton Falls, Alleghany County Virginia was Illustrated in the London News in 1864, with an engraving of a painting by John Chapman.
Condition:
canvas is re stretched and wax lined, surface crackle throughout, three quarter size areas of retouch to the left of falls, possible puncture repairs, small dots of retouch throughout; frame with some wear especially at corners
