John A. Andrew." H: 12 1/2 in. PROVENANCE: David and Linda Arman note: After a sculpture by Martin Milmore, 1870. note John A. Andrew served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1861 to 1866, elected by the widest margin of votes in the state's history. An ardent Unionist and abolitionist, he was the first Governor to send troops to Washington D.C. and the first to send troops to battle. He also advocated the use of African-American soldiers, the Massachusetts, 54th during the Civil War. Before becoming Governor of Masssachusetts, he provided legal council for John Brown and lost the trial. slightly soiled
