American school 19th century portrait of john stuart patterson at sixteen Unsigned, but inscribed "John Stuart Patterson at about the age of 16 about the year AD1828," graphite on paper, tipped into family Bible, printed by Matthew Carey , Philadelphia, 1802. The Bible also contains family photographs, the leather binding printed "This Book was purchased anno domini in the year of our Lord 1805 by Sam'l Patterson. Sept. 25th" and "This book was rebound by Andrew Stuart Patterson May 1901." The Bible also contains many entrees concerning the family history,. 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. PROVENANCE: John Stuart Patterson was born February 19, 1812, the son of Samuel and Mary Stuart Patterson. His family had a business "Patterson & Duncan Dealers in Fancy and Staple Dry Goods, Corner of Main & Pearl St. Cincinnati, Ohio." He married Emily Amanda Ball and fathered three children. He died at Fordham, New York City April 3 1886 and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery Long Island. Patterson, (1867-1950) two mountain landscapes, etchings and engraving Hills of Anacapri. One pencil signed and inscribed, 'To Charles Dana.' Both unframed with mattes. About the artist: born in Soerabaija (Surabaja), Java, Miss Patterson worked during her lifetime as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and art teacher in Boston and Wellesley. She studied art formally at The Pratt Institute, New York under Arthur Dow and with Herman Dudley Murphy and Charles Herbert Woodbury in Boston. By 1909 she was assistant director of drawing for Boston public schools and was appointed director by 1912. She traveled to Spain in summer of 1910. Studied with Ciaudio Castelucho in Italy by 1912, and later with him in Paris. Also she studied with Augalada. Miss Patterson first studied wood-block printing with Ethel Mars in Paris and was given her first one-person exhibition, arranged my Miss Mars, at Galerie Levesque in 1913. She exhibited at Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. She settled in Boston and by the fall of 1920 had been appointed head of art department in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She exhibited in Paris in 1922; traveled to Italy twice between 1922 and 1924. She served as secretary of the art society, The Group, during the 1920s. She continued to teach until early in the 1940s, spending her summers teaching and painting at her studio, Horn's Hill, on Monhegan Island, Maine. Miss Patterson died in Boston on February 17th, 1950. Patterson taught in Boston Public Schools, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Southbridge, Massachusetts, later becoming Director of the Art Department at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

A copy of Elements of Natural Philosophy; Explaining the Laws and Principles of Attraction, Gravitation, Mechanics, Pneumatics, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Electricity, and Optics: with a General View of the Solar System, by John Webster, with Notes and Corrections by Robert Patterson (Philadelphia, 1808). Patterson (1743-1824) was a Revolutionary War veteran, member of the American Philosophical Society, director of the U.S. Mint from 1805 until his death, and professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania from 1779 to 1810. At President Jefferson?s request, in 1803 Patterson taught Lewis & Clark how to calculate latitude and longitude. This copy was bound in quarter-leather by Turner Hamilton, bookbinder at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, and was in that institution?s library. Front cover is detached, but present.
