A. LINCOLN, EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION IN NEWSPAPER The New York Observer September 25th, 1862, 2 pages, one large page folded. This is a very early printing, in a newspaper, of the proclamation Abraham Lincoln made toward enforcement of freeing of southern slaves. President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in the midst of the Civil War, announcing on September 22, 1862, that if the rebels did not end the fighting and rejoin the Union by January 1, 1863, all slaves in the rebellious states would be free. The proclamation by Lincoln is on page #310 covering most of the middle column.

Note: Joseph Morgan Showalter was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1845. In 1862 he enlisted as a private in the 124th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and fought in the Battle of Antietam and Chancellorsville, after which his enlistment ended. When Lee marched into Pennsylvania in 1863, he enlisted in the 29th Emergency Militia and served as a corporal. The unit was held in reserve and discharged in August 1863. In 1864 he enlisted as a quarter master sergeant in the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry and served at Petersburg and Appomattox. He was discharged on June 12, 1865. After the war, he was involved with the Grand Army of the Republic. He died in 1942 at the age of 96-97.

Note: For the ninety years of its existence, from 1836-1926, the Astor House Hotel offered its clientele the height of luxury. John Jacob Astor built his 309 room hotel in the city's most fashionable residential district, at the corner of Broadway and Vesey Street. The ground floor building at the far right of the facade is the Rushton & Aspinwall drug store that opened at 10 Astor house in 1836. The most influential men and women of the day were guests at one time or another, including Abraham Lincoln on his way to the 1861 inauguration.
