American School portrait, said to be John Adams (1735-1826), second president of the United States, first vice-president, member of the Continental Congress, figure with bamboo cane in a landscape, unsigned, circa 1770(?), 35-3/4 x 27-5/8 in.; 18th century style gilt wood and composition frame. Restretched on new stretcher, lined with wax and linen, retouch throughout over 50 percent of surface affected in face, background, hair, crackle, abrasions; frame resurfaced, abrasions, loss to composition, repairs. In 1904 Adams studied at the John Herron Art Institute under William Forsyth, later taking trips to Italy and Spain to study with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri respectively.
