He fought in the American Civil War and the United States expedition to Korea. Drake was a descendant of the Royal Navy 's Admiral Sir Bernard Drake (c. 1537–1586).

ADMIRAL DAVID FARRAGUT, 1864 ALSHandwritten and signed letter by Admiral David G. Farragut, Union flag officer in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. Written from the Hartford, the flagship in the Battle of Mobile Bay, which was the event -- taking place only a few months after this letter was written -- that spawned Farragut's famous line, "Damn the torpedoes ... full speed ahead." Letter measures 7-3/4" x 5". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collectn of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. The estate collection, assembled from about 1920-1960, has never been offered for sale at auction. See images. This item can be shipped in-house.

ADMIRAL FITZROY BAROMETERLate 19th century. Paper scales, alcohol and mercury thermometer, contained in an ornately carved wooden case. Admiral Fitzroy (1805-1865) was the captain of the HMS Beagle that took Charles Darwin to Patagonia. After his retirement from the governorship of New Zealand, he turned his attention to meteorology and invented his own barometer. Wear on wood is consistent with its age, top carved decoration detached, and the original glass is missing.

English Tole-Cased Four-Piece Dress Uniform Set, originally belonging to Royal Navy Vice-Admiral George Napier Tomlin (1875-1947), commander of the Allied Squadron in support of the White Army during the Russian Revolution and sailing on the HMS Liverpool (active 1909-1921), the set comprised of a gilt-brass and shagreen-mounted steel dress sword and scabbard, l. 24-1/2", a pair of Gieves Limited, London, gold and silver epaulettes, w. 5-1/2", d. 7-1/2", and an Admiral's dress hat trimmed in gold, w. 7-3/4", along with a fitted grained tole storage case lined in the period scarlet velvet, accompanied by a bound series of photocopies of notices and clippings recording the life and career of Vice-Admiral Tomlin.
