WILKINSON TOBY JUG - ADMIRAL DAVID BEATTYAdmiral David Beatty, Commander-in-Chief of the British Grand Fleet, is depicted sitting down, wearing the dress uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, and holding an explosive shell inscribed “Dread Nought.†(Beatty is remembered for saying, after two of his ships exploded during the Battle of Jutland, “There seems to be something wrong with our ships today.â€) Originally produced from 1915 to 1919, these Toby Jugs are considered some of the finest examples ever produced by an English ceramic company.

ADMIRAL DAVID FARRAGUT, 1864
ADMIRAL DAVID FARRAGUT, 1864 ALSHandwritten and signed letter by Admiral David G. Farragut, Union flag officer in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. Written from the Hartford, the flagship in the Battle of Mobile Bay, which was the event -- taking place only a few months after this letter was written -- that spawned Farragut's famous line, "Damn the torpedoes ... full speed ahead." Letter measures 7-3/4" x 5". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collectn of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. The estate collection, assembled from about 1920-1960, has never been offered for sale at auction. See images. This item can be shipped in-house.

Admiral Beatty was commander in chief Grand Fleet from 1916-1919 during the First World War. In 1916, Beatty, with his battle cruisers, shown here in the background, was engaged in a great sea fight with the Germans off Jutland. Farragut (1801-1870) a Union commander in charge of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron which captured New Orleans and led his ships to victory at the battle of Mobile Bay. Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) was born in Scotland and moved to the United States to study photography in 1856. He is famous for his Civil War photographs along with his photographs of Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators. Admiral Andrew Hull Foote (1806-1863) commanded the USS Perry off the coast of Africa from 1849-1851 where he was active in suppressing the slave trade. He commanded the Union Navy during the Civil War but died unexpectedly before assuming command of the Southern Atlantic Blockade. John Flaxman RA was a British sculptor and draughtsman, and a leading figure in British and European Neoclassicism. Early in his career, he worked as a modeller for Josiah Wedgwood's pottery. He spent several years in Rome, where he produced his first book illustrations. He was a prolific maker of funerary monuments.

English Tole-Cased Four-Piece Dress Uniform Set, originally belonging to Royal Navy Vice-Admiral George Napier Tomlin (1875-1947), commander of the Allied Squadron in support of the White Army during the Russian Revolution and sailing on the HMS Liverpool (active 1909-1921), the set comprised of a gilt-brass and shagreen-mounted steel dress sword and scabbard, l. 24-1/2", a pair of Gieves Limited, London, gold and silver epaulettes, w. 5-1/2", d. 7-1/2", and an Admiral's dress hat trimmed in gold, w. 7-3/4", along with a fitted grained tole storage case lined in the period scarlet velvet, accompanied by a bound series of photocopies of notices and clippings recording the life and career of Vice-Admiral Tomlin.
