TWO VINTAGE WEST AFRICAN CEREMONIAL MASKSA pair of vintage West African masks. The first mask is a Senufo tribe Guro mask (Cote d'Ivoire / Mali), a horned mask of carved and painted wood measuring 20" x 9" x 5 1/2". The second mask is a Dan tribe Poro mask (Cote d'Ivoire / Liberia), carved wood and cloth with bells, braided cords, and cowrie shells affixed, measuring 13" x 9" x 4 1/2".
Condition
The Senufo mask is in very good condition, and the Dan mask is in good condition, noting wear to the bells and overall soiling.

AFRICAN BAMILEKE MASKDESCRIPTION: An African mask from Bamileke tribe of Cameroon. This is an expressively hand carved wood face mask with an overlay cover of hand hammered brass and further finished with presumably human natural hair. The Bamileke reserve their highest allegiance for their linear ancestors whose spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased. Recognizing the importance of the skull, representations of the head are found in nearly all decorated ceremonial objects including these expressive masks.

WILLIAM MCBRIDE O/B ABSTRACT PAINTINGWilliam McBride (Illinois/Louisiana, 1912-2000) oil on canvasboard painting, titled "Abstracted Figures", depicting angular shapes inspired by African masks and rendered with muted tones and black outlines, on a multicolored background. Signed "McBride" lower right. Housed in a contemporary painted frame dotted with circular impressions on corners. Sight: 24" H x 18" W. Framed: 29" H x 23 1/2" W. Biography: William McBride was a 20th century African American artist born in Louisiana. He later moved to Chicago where he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He joined a collective of young Black artists known as the Arts and Crafts Guild and was active in the Works Progress Administration. His work was featured in the 1940 opening exhibit of the South Side Community Art Center in Chicago, which remains the only surviving community art center created under the WPA. During the latter part of his career, he became inspired by African imagery and masks, and incorporated them into his artwork.
Condition:
Very good condition for painting. Slight chipping of frame veneer ranging from 1/4" to 1".

FRAMED SAMMIE NICELY (TENNESSEE) CERAMIC PLAQUE, AFRICA...Samuel Louis Nicely (American/ East Tennessee, 1947-2015) painted and framed stoneware plaque depicting an African Mask, against an orange background. Float mounted on a mat in an ebonized frame with gilt edges. Signed on mat and additionally en verso of frame. Plaque: 7" x 5". Frame - 11" x 9 1/2". Biography (from the Reece Museum, East Tennessee State University): "Samuel Louis Nicely (1947 - 2015) was an artist and educator who embraced his cultural heritage as an African American man from Appalachia. Born in Russellville, Tennessee, he developed a love for the arts at an early age and went on to earn a B.S. in art education from Middle Tennessee State University and to study at The Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg. Nicely co-founded the From Africa to Appalachian Foundation and was the Artist in Residence at the Reece Museum in 2014." His works are in the collections of the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Fisk University, Georgia State University, and the Reece Museum.

MALI MARKA MASKMarka mask from Mali; copper affixed to wood with Cowry (Cowrie) shell accents; measures approximately 20" tall; please refer to photographs for condition. The Marka are neighbors of the Bamana (Bambara) people and their artistic styles share striking similarities. Like the Bambara, the Marka fashion their masks with very small mouths with raised lips at the bottom of an elongated face. The nose is usually extremely long and elegantly thin and the eyes are cast downward, a show of respect used in many African masks.
